Update 10/26/2017:  “Run free, sweet girl, and give our love to all who have gone before.”

The unsinkable Ms. Molly 48 has left her foster home home for the Rainbow Bridge.  After being found wandering in Ohio and slated for euthanasia, this beloved senior lady enjoyed two years in a loving MAESSR home.   Her troubles are now behind her, and she’s seeing clearly, running quickly and able to enjoy herself no matter the weather.  She will be truly missed by those who cared for her on this side of the Bridge.

What a blessing to have Ms. Molly still with her foster family.  A year and a half ago she was to be euthanized at a shelter, simply because of her age. In her second winter as a MAESSR gal, she is enjoying her life, quietly watching other fosters come and go.  Molly had her foster mom a bit worried with some increased panting and lackluster attitude, but an adjustment in her medications (that she loves taking with “stinky” canned food!) made a noticeable difference. 

Molly is always up to go outside no matter what the weather, and takes her time sniffing and walking around the yard. When she is ready to come in, she waits at the bottom of the couple steps for help, as the spondylosis continues to weaken her rear. Despite having only nubs for teeth, Molly loves when fresh bones are handed out, and spends the day working to get the marrow out. As with any spaniel, her overall status can be judged by her eagerness for food, and Molly’s appetite is excellent. 

Although Molly is always ready to go for an outing, her enthusiasm is short lived and she comes to realize that she is most comfortable at home in familiar surroundings where she spends her time just hanging out with the rest of the gang. Here’s hoping that Ms. Molly maintains her health and is able to attend the regional Springerfest this year, to meet the people that make this all possible!
Update 08/10/2016:  “Molly considers herself “unsinkable” and is doing her best to age gracefully.“

Time has been catching up with Miss Molly, although she has been doing her best to ignore it! She didn’t mind the cold and snow of last winter, still keeping her routine of going around the perimeter of her fenced yard. As the weather broke, though, it became evident that this gal was aging. Despite an excellent appetite and gaining some weight, Molly has that “old dog” boney structure. The spondylosis in her spine has weakened her rear end and has made the couple steps up the porch more of a challenge.  She continues to take joint supplements, helping to keep her mobile.

Her vision has also become more compromised; her eyes are more cloudy and she “misses” treats handed to her.  Molly’s significant heart murmur is being monitored, and her medication for it will be adjusted as needed. 

Molly has seen a few fosters come and go in recent months but she always tries to stay out of the way, picking a quiet spot to observe from while avoiding commotion.  Outside she has picked a spot in the yard, against the porch, that is “her” spot. Molly still enjoys walks around the neighborhood, though at a slower pace and shortened distance. 

A recent trip to the beach proved to be a bit much for Molly, although to her the idea of going for a ride seemed to be a good idea at the time! Being in unfamiliar surroundings with strange sounds and smells overwhelmed her. She simply sat down and waited to go home while the rest of the gang swam, barked, and splashed! 

Molly considers herself “unsinkable” and is doing her best to age gracefully. This gal asks for nothing more than good food, some loving, and a quiet spot to watch the world go by.  What a blessing that all her needs are being met…
Update 12/13/2015: “I don’t take up much room and I’m not a picky eater (did I mention that I REALLY love treats?)”

MAESSR’S senior gal, Molly, is hopeful that Santa will grant her a special Christmas gift:

Dear Santa,

I’m not sure that I should be asking you for anything since I’ve already been such a fortunate girl this year. You probably know that I was found wandering in Ohio and brought to a scary shelter. I was so lucky to be taken in by MAESSR!  They helped me with some health problems and I’m getting some medications. Now, I feel so much better!

But Santa, what I’m really, really hoping for is a family to call my own. My foster family is wonderful, but it is kind of busy with six other dogs in the house.  As an older gal, a quieter home might suit me better; also, one with without stairs. I don’t take up much room and I’m not a picky eater (did I mention that I REALLY love treats?) I love car rides and walks, or just a good sniff around the yard. I might enjoy a new doggie friend and I wouldn’t bother a cat if my new family had one.  If my people could be home most of the time, that would be fantastic!

I hope that my list isn’t too long, Santa.  Please see if you can make some Christmas magic happen for me.

Original:   “Once Molly got done investigating her new surroundings, this old gal picked a soft bed to curl up on and proved to be trustworthy in the house, not having any accidents.”

Molly was found as a stray in Ohio, unclaimed and then slated to be euthanized because of her age and suspected mass in her abdomen. Thank goodness MAESSR was contacted and she got into foster care!
 
Her vet visit proved there to be NO mass in her abdomen, but just an age related heart condition!  Molly does have an enlarged heart and some fluid buildup, but is starting medication to help ease this. Even though Molly is missing most of her teeth, she has a good appetite and enjoys her meals, woofing while watching dinner being prepared!
 
Once Molly got done investigating her new surroundings, this old gal picked a soft bed to curl up on and proved to be trustworthy in the house, not having any accidents. Molly will check out the litter boxes and trash cans, probably still thinking she has to “find a meal” from her time as a stray.
 
Molly goes outside with the rest of the pack and is happy to be sniffing around the yard. She does need help with the couple steps up to the deck; her foster mom is not sure if this is because of vision or weakness in her rear, or both. Also, she is not sure about Molly’s potential hearing loss.  It might be that she just doesn’t know her new name.
 
While her foster mom is at work, Molly does not mind being crated but she is given free run of the house when her mom is home and at night.  As far as commands go, Molly seems to know “sit.”  She rides nicely in the car and does not pull too much on the leash.
 
This gal still enjoys life and is adjusting to the changes that have happened to her. She gets along fine with the rest of the crew, both canine and feline!  How about sharing your life with sweet Molly!
