Update 09/02/2013: “She absolutely adores having her butt scratched, dancing and flinging her head around with joy at this attention.”
Miss Molly enjoys very good health. Toward keeping her that way, she had her dental a few weeks ago and did have 3 teeth extracted. She was quite well-behaved at the vet’s office and is pleased that she can continue to eat well. You see, Molly loves to eat and does snarf her food down quickly! She barks and dances when she realizes her foster mom is fixing her meals. She also loves her afternoon treats. She’s very food motivated……but then, what Springer isn’t?
Molly really enjoys her toys too. Her foster mom gave her a stuffed duck and Molly carried it around, squeaking it. Unfortunately, by the next day, she had gutted it and white stuffing was everywhere! Still, she picked up its remains and smiled and danced around. She has a snake now; it has squeakers in each of its 8 sections and does not have much stuffing. Molly LOVES this toy and play growls when playing tug of war with it. She absolutely adores having her butt scratched, dancing and flinging her head around with joy at this attention. While she is playful, she is not overly active. She enjoys being with people, but she does not like other dogs and she hates cats.
Rounding out Molly’s temperament is the realization that she is not very obedient. She can even be quite stubborn. She loves running in the back yard, but this is where the treats come in handy. She is also a wonderful “security guard.” She barks when cars pull in the driveway and does not have a little girly bark, either! She woke her family up one night with barking when a deer happened to jump the fence into the back yard. Good girl?
For the family with no other pets, Molly would make a wonderful addition. She’s not crossed paths with young children since being in foster care but she was great with the 2 teenage girls she met. She loves to play with toys and be rubbed and scratched. She also likes to get on the couch and be cuddled. She would be an excellent watch dog without being aggressive. Not much gets by this gal. Molly is a lovely and loving young-at-heart senior. Welcome her into your family and you’ll never be sharing your garden with wildlife again!!
Original: “Molly is in great shape for a senior gal. She is fairly active and enjoys her play time, but is also content to lay down for a good belly rub.”
A casualty of her owners’ divorce, Molly found herself in a Virginia shelter looking for a new home. After MAESSR volunteers got word of this girl’s plight, it wasn’t long before a volunteer was on her way to spring Molly and get her started on a new life. Molly traveled to her foster home in style, ears blowing in the breeze.
A well-mannered girl, Molly does not do any counter-surfing and stays out of the trash. She is quite content with toys and therefore does not chew inappropriately. She does get on the furniture to visit with people and get her belly scratched. When she meets new people, she wags her tail and greets them with all four feet on the ground. However, once she gets to know someone, she gets excited to see that person and forgets her greeting manners and will stand up and put her paws on him/her. It’s not as dramatic as actually jumping up on someone, but is still not good manners.
During the day when no one is home, Molly is in an indoor/outdoor run in the basement with the other dogs in her foster home. She goes outside to do her business. When she is in the house for house time, her foster parents take her outside when she first comes out of the kennel. She plays and runs around and does not mess in the house. However, recently she was excited and nervous with some new dogs at the home, and she did her business inside with no signal. Overall, her foster mom believes that Molly will be fine if her new owners make sure that she has a chance to go outside and potty every few hours.
Molly seems content in her run although, like any normal dog, she will bark if animals come near the house. She sleeps on a raised bed in her run along with the other dogs. She will go easily into a crate, but she really does not like to be confined in one and will bark and whine a little. The shelter reported that Molly seemed nervous around bigger dogs. In her foster home, she has continued to show some of this anxiety and seems to prefer to have her own space.
It does not seem that Molly has had any obedience training. She does walk on a leash without pulling, but she does not know “sit” or “stay.” She will sit if you push her little bottom down, but only for a little while. She is somewhat reserved about meeting others on a walk, especially if they have a dog. She turns her head away and will not look them in the eye. If a person does not have a dog, she stays beside her foster family, but wags her tail and enjoys being petted. She seems to enjoy car rides, especially if she can stick her head out of the window!
Molly loves squeaky toys! Her favorite is a lime-green snake with squeakers in each of the different sections of its length. She will walk around with her toy in her mouth, and will easily give up the toy to toss or play tug. While she enjoys her interactions with people, she seems very uncomfortable around other dogs and will not engage in play. It’s also not recommended that she go to a household with cats, as she sees the cats in her foster home as fair game to chase! She loves to have her butt scratched and her tummy rubbed!
All of the dogs in her foster home are fed in their own runs to avoid any stealing of food. Molly loves her food! She is fed twice a day, and awaits her meals with enthusiasm. If her foster mom is not fast enough, Molly barks to let her know! She allows her foster mom to take her food bowl away while she is eating, and will also allow her to pet her while she eats.
Molly is in great shape for a senior gal. She is fairly active and enjoys her play time, but is also content to lay down for a good belly rub. She was great when her foster parents gave her a bath, brushed her, and cleaned her ears. Good girl, Molly!
Molly would do best in a forever home with no other dogs or cats. She would make a great companion to someone who would play with her, take her for walks, and then come back home and relax. She is very sweet, but not needy. She does not have to be in your face or in your lap, but is content to lie at your feet or beside you on the couch so she can be petted. If you’d like a low maintenance companion, Molly just might be your match!
