Good Golly, it’s Miss Molly who has come into MAESSRland after her Pennsylvania owner could not tend to both a newborn baby and a puppy. Molly is a six month old Energizer bunny of a pup! “Play,” you say? Molly would love to play – all toys are appreciated! Even though she loves toys, Molly does not resource guard anything. If she picks up something she should not have, she will accept her foster mom taking the item out of her mouth with no issue.
Molly came into her foster home a little unsure of the resident dogs, but it did not take much time for her to feel comfortable. She loves playing with the other foster pup as well as the resident Springer and German Shepherd. Molly runs around in the backyard with the other dogs, all while carrying a toy in her mouth! Molly has also met the resident cats and is still unsure of them. One cat hissed at her, growled, and smacked her in the head. Molly flattened out on the floor and turned her head away. She did give a grumble but made no attempt to go after the cat. Perhaps Molly would prefer no felines at her forever home!
On car rides, Molly likes to investigate the front and back seat before settling down. She did well meeting the other people and dogs at the vet, though she wasn’t overly fond of having her temperature taken. Molly is also shy of cars driving by, but is getting used to them.
Going for walks is one of Molly’s favorite activities. She loves investigating the new environment, even when other dogs bark at her from behind fenced yards. This did not bother her until one little dog came rushing out to the fence barking at Molly. This startled her and made the hair between her shoulders and hind end rise, looking like a punk rock hairdo! Another of Molly’s favorite things to do is watch doggy videos on the computer. She will turn her head left and right, and if the dog in the video barks, she may offer a bark back as if asking “Do you want to play?”
Molly is working on her housetraining and doing fairly well on this, running out with the resident dogs. She is a smart pup and learned the doggy door from the start! Molly is crate-trained and knows when it’s time for the crate. When told “in,” she will go in with just a little hesitation. Molly is being fed in the crate and readily runs to her crate at feeding time. At first she would scarf down her food; now, she is taking to eat a bit more slowly, savoring every bite! At bedtime, Molly knows it is time for a snack and then to settle down for a nice long sleep!
Recently, Molly attended a MAESSR event and thoroughly enjoyed all the attention she received. A MAESSR volunteer’s daughter worked with Molly on clicker training and hand signals to sit. Being the smart pup she is, she conquered this lesson very quickly. Now she doesn’t even need the clicker or the verbal command. With just the hand signal, Molly sits readily. She is learning “sit,” “turn,” and “down,” and has conquered these lessons as well! Molly has great eye contact and when her foster mom says “watch me,” Molly watches! What a smart girl! Puppy obedience classes should be a breeze for Miss Molly!
MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs under 1 year old to enroll their puppy in an obedience class within 60 days of adoption.
At feeding time, Miss Molly is a very happy pup and has to counter-surf to see what the holdup is! Molly is being told “off” when she is counter-surfing and is getting the idea. Molly will also come when called. If the deck gate is closed, Molly readily jumps on the pavers at the side of the deck and comes through the railings, no problem! Molly loves to be with her people, being held and cuddled. A good neck scratching will keep Molly still as a statue, just asking for more scratches!
Molly would love a forever home with children, another dog, and a family that will help guide and train her to be the wonderful adult dog she is destined to be. This girl loves attention, love, and life. Wouldn’t you like to share your life with Molly?
