Update 07/28/2013: “Moki’s ready to meet an ice cream loving family who will share not only their cool treats but their hearts as well.  Got vanilla?”

MAESSR’s Moki is having a terrific time with her foster family this summer.  She’s feeling frisky and bounds around their yard in glee.  At least once, after a busy day, there was a special outing to cap the evening.  Her foster parents went for ice cream at a local specialty shop.  Her foster mom got a small vanilla cup of ice cream for Moki and gave her some of it.  When she was done, Moki did not whine for more; she just lay down at her foster mom’s feet.  Moki was on a leash, but she did not try to wander away, despite the numerous people coming and going…………most of whom must have had ice cream treats too.  What manners, Miss Moki!! 

Her family also introduced Moki to crating.  It’s always a good skill for a dog to have……..should it need to overnight in a veterinary hospital or travel in a confined space.  Unfortunately, Moki refused to go in.  Who’s betting she’d change her mind if there was a cup of vanilla in there?

Update 06/27/2013:  “Moki’s foster mom is very impressed with how well Moki listens.” 

Beautiful Miss Moki………she’s settled well into her 2^nd foster home, one in which she enjoys the comforts of being an only dog.  Moki’s foster mom is very impressed with how well Moki listens.  Nine times out of ten Moki comes when she is called.  Occasionally she pretends she does not hear her foster mom when she is “on the scent,” but Moki’s foster mom just repeats Moki’s name in a sterner voice or claps her hands and Moki comes right to her.  When her foster mom leaves the house, Moki lies quietly upstairs with her foster dad in his computer room.  Her life seems complete with the companionship of her people.

Moki has an entire toy box full of dog toys but prefers her “chippy,” a stuffed chipmunk.  She will carry it around in her mouth and then drop it before going outside. Recently, her foster mom was reading and Moki came over and put her head in her lap.  Moki’s foster mom said, “Go find Chippy!  Go find Chippy!” and Moki promptly left the room and returned with her chipmunk in her mouth for her foster mom to take and then throw for Moki.  This gal is so smart!

She’s easy to live with too.  Her foster parents have never heard Moki bark…….not once.  A guard dog she is not, but peacefully quiet, she is.  When it’s time to do out, she no longer whines; she just goes over to the door and stands there, or, if the need to go is urgent, she scratches at the door.  She has quickly learned the boundaries of her backyard and does not cross them. At night she is sleeping on the floor in her foster parents’ bedroom.  Life is good!

The only imperfection in Moki’s world at the moment seems to be an allergy.  Scratching and paw licking prompted a visit to the vet who started her on an antihistimine and recommended weekly oatmeal baths.  Moki and her family are hoping this need is seasonal!  The vet also noticed her ears were really dirty, despite regular care, so twice weekly cleaning has started.  Sorry, Moki……..that may be year-round!  Other than that, she is healthy.  

With the vet visit came her first encounter with a feline while in foster care.  A cat walked by her in the office and she did not go after it.  Her ears were up on full alert as she looked at it but she didn’t even sniff it.  Good girl, Moki!!  More to come as this gal approaches becoming “available……”Original:  “When Moki is excited, she carries around her small stuffed chipmunk toy which she always allows her foster mom to take from her, so she can throw it for her to retrieve. Moki was surrendered to MAESSR by her Virginia family because she was fussing with the other female dog in the family when food was present or attention was being shown to the other dog. Additionally, the family got a boxer puppy at Christmas and the puppy irritated Moki. So, her relinquishing family thought Moki would be happier as an only dog.

Although Moki was a complete love bug with her foster parents, she was not keen on the resident dog. No major altercations were allowed to break out, but she showed him lots of curled lip and grumbling and even nipped him once. Because of her behavior towards other dogs, Moki was placed in another MAESSR foster home that had no pets.

Since arriving at her new foster home, Moki is again receiving rave reviews from her new foster mom. She is a real sweetheart who loves to follow her everywhere and is always ready to give her kisses. This Velcro Springer also loves to roll on her back for tummy rubs! Ah, life without canine competition is sweet!!

This pretty girl is housetrained and has shown no need to be crated. When she needs to go out, she whines at the door. Even though her relinquishing family said that Moki was an accomplished counter-surfer, she has not shown this behavior in her foster home. She will sniff the counters and trash but has not taken anything; she responds promptly to her foster mom saying, “No!” When invited up on the sofa, Moki is happy to comply, but she will get down when told to do so by her foster mom. She rides very well in the car choosing the floor of the passenger side as her spot to enjoy the ride. She lies there quietly with her chin either on her paws or on the passenger seat. When coming back into the house from a walk, Moki gets toweled off and does not mind getting her feet touched. She has been professionally groomed and she does not mind having her ears touched either.

Moki walks well on a leash without pulling. While on a walk, she spotted some squirrels. Although she whined at them, she did not lunge after them. She actually has a high prey drive and will “point” when she is “on the scent.” She even tried to jump up a tree after a critter! Not climb, but jump up it! Moki knows “sit,” “stay,” “come,” “down,” and “bang…play dead.” Her foster mom is training her to “sit” and “stay” before going outside as a safety measure so Moki will not bolt out of the house. Moki stays until she is given the release command “okay.”

Preferring human company over being left alone, Moki vocalizes when she is separated from her foster mom. To prevent this canine solo from happening at night, her foster mom has decided to sleep downstairs with her, an arrangement Moki likes very much! When her foster mom is working on the computer, Moki happily sleeps on the floor near her. When Moki is excited, she carries around her small stuffed chipmunk toy which she always allows her foster mom to take from her, so she can throw it for her to retrieve. Good girl, Moki!

Moki would love a forever home where she would be an only dog and receive all of the attention of her doting parents. This sweetie just wants to please. How about making Moki a part of your family?
