Updated 5/14/06: Mojo is settling in nicely at his foster home. He has figured out the treat system and runs into his crate the moment the peanut butter jar is opened. The crate has sometimes moved a foot across the kitchen floor when his foster mom gets home from work, so there must be some barking and fussing initially, but he is always quiet when she comes in the door. He does get anxious when left alone loose in the house, even when his foster mom goes outside for a few minutes, so crating is a must for this boy.
In a short time, Mojo has learned a lot of new things. His “sits” have become quite professional and he knows “wait” and “give”, particularly useful because he is still a little thief. He will stay off furniture when instructed. His patience and frustration tolerance are increasing. The counter surfing has lessened but will be a hard behavior to completely extinguish. He has shown some possessiveness of his food bowl, so he is doing desensitizing exercises with his foster mom and that is going well. He still pulls some on leash. He happily acknowledges people he meets on walks with a few jumps in greeting, but then sits quietly while his “walker” chats.
Although he has stood up against the fence several times when interesting critters appeared next door, Mojo has still not jumped over. He has demonstrated his athletic ability in other ways, such as using a planter for a springboard to vault over patio furniture. He has also jumped on top of his crate to ambush the resident dog as he runs around the corner. Mojo rarely misses a chance to create some fun!
He remains a happy, energetic, playful boy who loves to be with his family, both human and canine. If you are looking for a dog to follow you everywhere and participate in all your activities, Mojo is your man.
Original: Mojo is a handsome, energetic pup. He is the perpetual in motion dog – always exploring the house and yard, playing with his toys, pestering the resident dog, and wrestling or racing around the yard with him. He seldom stops by choice until he collapses in the evening, and even then, he’ll pop up at a moment’s notice. He is a very nice dog who will probably be a great snuggler, when he is old enough to be still for that long. Like a typical Springer, he barks at people outside the house and becomes their best friend the moment they enter.
Mojo has had very little education. He does know “sit” and has remembered that is a good idea to come when he is called, at least for long enough to get a pat and maybe a treat. He is good in the house, except that he is an unremorseful counter surfer. He is crated during the day next to the resident dog and does fine with that. He fusses about sleeping in the crate at night, but he is getting better about it, and is quiet after days when he has had enough activity. He gets along well with the resident dog but could use some work on his doggy manners. Mojo can be somewhat possessive of toys. Like many pups, his canine play is very physical, and he doesn’t always pick up on dog signals to stop.
In his previous home, Mojo had a history of fence-jumping to visit neighbors. With plenty for him to do in his foster home, he has shown no need to search the neighborhood for entertainment. Mojo learns fast, it only took him two meals to learn to wait out of the way until his food is prepared and set down for him. He shows an encouraging aptitude for obedience training and will benefit greatly from attending classes with his adopting family.
All in all, Mojo is a healthy young Springer. He is looking for a family who can match his activity level and give him some structure. He would enjoy having another dog in the household to help burn off his energy and teach him the rules that all pups need to learn. Because of his high energy level, Mojo would do best with older children who might not be startled or toppled by his fast maneuvers. In return, his family will get a loyal companion and a constant source of amusement. What a winning opportunity for all!!!
