Misty was used by a Pennsylvania backyard breeder but relinquished to rescue as she grew older and less productive. Despite being nine years old, she’s active and has no apparent issues from her years as a mom. When she first arrived in foster care, a twelve week old puppy was visiting and she was protective of the little one, making sure the other dogs meant no harm before letting her go off to play with them. On a three day temporary foster, she bonded with one person and paid not much mind to the four younger children running around. While she puts up with the resident Springer, she tends to play alpha gal with the two mild-mannered hounds in her foster home. She has not been exposed to cats, but because of her low prey drive, her foster mom suspects she would be fine with the feline types.
Despite her background, Misty has only had one accident indoors in ten days. She stands by the back door when she wants to go out and wags her tail if a leash is produced. She’s been in a crate without issue, but since she’s trustworthy without one, she isn’t confined and just sleeps on her rug at the base of the stairs at night or if her humans are away. During the day, she can usually be seen flopped at her foster mom’s feet. Misty loves her “person” and would be fine off leash in a safe environment as she wants to hang out nearby and comes when called.
This bright girl is learning indoor manners, but does want to counter-surf, and, since she can be pushy about wanting the mild-mannered hounds’ dinner, she is tethered while everyone eats. She doesn’t bother the garbage can, preferring to look pitiful while the food’s still on the table. Misty doesn’t get up on furniture or chew anything she shouldn’t, and so far has no interest in toys. She’s learning ‘”sit” for treats.
During the work day, she’s low key but always up for a walk or trot if one is offered. She is fine on leash, going out in tandem with other resident dogs and ignoring other dogs she meets on leash. When her foster sister, a sight hound, spots a rabbit or squirrel, Misty doesn’t get particularly excited, but does love to sniff for critters as she walks. Her stamina is building and she’s done several two mile loops with her foster mom. Those few extra pounds should drop easily with daily walks. The only hazard to running with her is the challenge of keeping that Springer nose going forward instead of the usual zig-zag pattern!
Misty likes car rides, having realized that they mean going on adventures with her people. She hangs out in the back, occasionally looking out the window. And, at the vet’s, with no shot history at all, she was a real champ. She stood quietly while having her temperature taken and while receiving four shots, a microchip and nasal bordatella. By the time that was done, she was ready to head out! This beautiful girl loves being brushed and came home from her temp-foster weekend with a nice grooming.
Ideally, Misty would love to be an only dog and go on adventures with her humans, but she would be fine with a male Springer. She wouldn’t do well with another alpha female. She doesn’t seek out younger children but would probably do well with teens. This sweet senior is almost ready to move into a permanent home where she could settle and blossom with her own family. Misty so deserves some love and peace and a joyful summertime. She bonds quickly and seems to ask,” Are you my new person?” with her beautiful eyes.
