Update 06/02/2014: “When her foster family comes home, she does a little jig and will sometimes wave a paw in the air to emphasize her delight.”
Mitzi has settled rapidly and contentedly into her foster home. In fact, she is a highly agreeable girl who is happy with just about anything she is offered. Although excited about her daily constitutionals, Mitzi will often turn toward home after she completes her business. If her foster mom takes off her leash, she will double-time her steps and wait on the front porch to be let in. There’s no place like home for Mitzi! If she could voice her preferences, she most likely would ask her foster family to keep her company on the back porch while she has a nice snooze on an old couch. This is the only furniture Mitzi climbs on and she does it with the help of a booster step provided by her foster mom.
Her round of antibiotics for a kidney infection has been completed, but Mitzi still has minor bladder leakage when she is extra tired from following the family in and out on the weekends or when she has difficulty getting up. This is a minor issue but she’s returning to the vet soon to see if it can be addressed with a medication. Just like older humans, Mitzi has a few creaks in her joints so she is now taking a daily supplement for joint health. She also has a few lumps and bumps on her body but she retains her beautiful, loving spirit. When her foster family comes home, she does a little jig and will sometimes wave a paw in the air to emphasize her delight.
Mitzi has shown little interest in the neighborhood dogs other than a petite pug. When she came across this dog, she followed it with interest and pawed at it in curiosity. She has an obvious interest in watching cats, birds, and squirrels, but does not consider them worth a chase.
At this stage of her life Mitzi is a sweet old girl who sleeps a lot. She would make a wonderful friend for someone looking for companionship. A loving home without many stairs would be her heaven. Springer seniors like Mitzi have so much love to give in return!
Update 05/11/2014: “She has the sweetest, wisest old face………like that of a capuchin monkey.”
Misty 3 was adopted in 2009 by a family who loved her and blessed her with the name she has gone by ever since………Mitzi. But time and circumstances change, and Mitzi was returned to MAESSR when the family downsized into an apartment. With no room for her, the family had a sincere desire that she have the opportunity to be loved by another family and so she is settling into foster care once again.
Over the years Mitzi has become an old dog but retains her young heart. She still loves to roll in the grass, toss a toy into the air, and bark bravely at strangers who dare to pass by her foster house. Once the strangers enter the house, however, she’s a good friend. She plops down at their feet without begging for attention. Feeding time is a high point in her day, and Mitzi keeps a very close eye on any good bread on the table. She has been known to take a peek at food on the counter, but hasn’t taken any. Good girl!!
In true Springer fashion, Mitzi follows her foster parents about the house and yard. Her foster dad had to confine her to the porch when she tried trailing him as he cut the lawn. Mitzi also gamely climbs the stairs to follow, but can use a steadying hand during the return trip down. She experiences carsickness on long or bumpy rides if fed beforehand so, when anticipating travel, some tweaking in her mealtime schedule is helpful and easily done.
Miss Mitzi is crate-trained, although her foster family has not been crating her. She is housetrained but has some problem right now with occasional incontinence. The cause of this is under investigation by her veterinarian and may stem from a mild kidney infection. While sorting this out, it has not been a problem for her foster family, who sees that she has regular access to the outdoors. When they are away, she is confined to a tiled area but is allowed to follow them throughout the house when they are home. At night she sleeps in her own bed in the master bedroom.
Mitzi has some hearing loss, but her eye sight and mind are sharp. She has the sweetest, wisest old face………..like that of a capuchin monkey. Her needs are few…………a short walk twice a day to do her business, a soft bed to sleep in, and loving care. The return for her new family is endless devotion.
Original: “Also, Misty has shown some aptitude for unscrewing the dog food container lid, all while maintaining a look of “Who, me? It was the other dog!” on her pretty face.”
Misty was adopted from a Maryland shelter by her previous owner about seven months ago and was having intermittent spats with the resident 12 year old female canine, most likely food related, so she was relinquished to MAESSR.
This gorgeous Springer girl has shown no aggression to the dogs in her current foster home. She is crate trained and sleeps quietly in her crate at night and is free to roam the house during the day. Misty is completely housebroken, taking care of business outside quickly in the morning and afternoon so she can get back in for meals. She likes to ride in the car and is quiet, but she rides best on an empty stomach. If the route is curvy and she has a full stomach, Misty will get car sick. She’s better with a window rolled down for some air.
Although Misty is a counter-surfer, she does have good taste. She and the resident Springer strategically extracted a new loaf of three seed bread from the counter and ate all but two slices of it. Then, the next day, they got into the trash and ate the last bit. Also, Misty has shown some aptitude for unscrewing the dog food container lid, all while maintaining a look of “Who, me? It was the other dog!” on her pretty face.
Misty doesn’t chew on inappropriate objects, but she loves to squeak toys and fling them in the air to tempt her foster folks into throwing them for her to retrieve. She knows sit, high-five, and stay, and will generally come on command if no food is in the opposite direction. She also obeys when told to stay in the kitchen while the foster folks eat meals.
When meeting other dogs, Misty is pretty indifferent, though definitely prefers Springers. When a non-resident terrier tried to play with her and she wasn’t interested, she gave an appropriate response and just ignored him. Misty loves walks and she goes running up to 2.5 miles at lunch, not minding being in a brace with another Springer or the resident terrier. She is a medium when it comes to energy level. While her foster mom works nearby, Misty naps or hangs out for four hours at a time.
This liver and white darling is just waiting for her forever family to come for her and make her their own!
