Update 01/13/11:
Miranda continues to do well in her foster home. In fact, she has something to brag about. After a lot of hard work, she’s about to become an obedience school graduate!
Her foster family reports that this little darling has endeared herself to the whole family – human and canine! With diploma in paw, Miranda is just about ready for her forever home.
Original:
Miranda is an adorable, petite, 3 year old that was rescued days before she was to be euthanized in a New Jersey shelter. A volunteer from another rescue group went in looking for their breed and when he saw Miranda shivering in the corner of her cage, he couldn’t bear to leave her there. Since they did not have expertise with the Springer Spaniel breed, they contacted MAESSR for help in finding Miranda a forever home.
When Miranda first arrived in her foster home, she joined twenty football fans watching the afternoon game. Although this may have frightened many other dogs, this did not faze Miranda. Among the guests there were many kids there ranging from age 6 to 12 and she allowed all of them to lavish her with attention. Despite all of the chaos, Miranda made her way around the house, exploring every inch of every room while continuing to come back for more attention.
When the family that transported Miranda to her foster home finally left, she sat patiently at the door waiting for their return and tapped at the door a few times. After a few words of encouragement, she walked her way back into the chaos, soaked up more attention, and became quite comfortable in her new surroundings.
Overall, Miranda has good house manners. She had two accidents in her first few days in foster care, but is now on a routine: dinner followed by a walk about an hour later to do her business. This schedule seems to be working. Miranda has cruised the counters a few times at her foster home, but she has never successfully gotten anything off them. Like the resident Springer, she has the run of the house during the day and sleeps at the foot of the bed at night. Although she has free range in her current foster home, Miranda was crated while during her time with the previous rescue with no problems.
This love bug adores attention and lets YOU know when you can stop. She’ll gently caress your hand to let you know that you aren’t finished showing her some love. She is also sharing the house with a resident male Springer and they get along great. Being about 3 years younger than the resident Springer, she is always eager to play, but that eagerness is not always reciprocated. After a few barks, she gives up and goes on her way. She does enjoy her daily outings with him, walking happily by his side while on leash. Miranda sometimes tugs a little, but it is not excessive.
Miranda’s foster family has seen one incident of resource guarding with her. While on a trip to the country for some pumpkin picking, she was licking a bone in the backseat. When attempts were made to take it away, she grumbled and snapped. No flesh was touched, but because of this, if there are any children in Miranda’s forever family, they should be old enough to respect her boundaries.
Fabulous in the car, Miranda sleeps like a baby and only wakes up to bark at gas station and drive-through window attendants. Although she can get loud, she listens after a few stern words and stops the barking. A protective pooch, she will also bark at new people entering the house, but again stops with a stern word. She does know most basic commands such as sit and paw. She comes immediately when you call her name.
Miranda just wants to be loved. She is very affectionate, and gets along well with kids and other dogs. If you’d like to spend some time going for walks and giving a sweet girl some love, ask about Miranda!
