Updated 10/19/2022: ” A family willing to keep him active will help him to maintain a healthy weight.”
Mick has been to the vet and is now up to date on his vaccines. He arrived in foster care at 81 big boy pounds; now at 72.5 pounds, Mick is on his way to a much healthier weight. The vet recommended a dental cleaning for Mick and noted a fatty lipoma that required no action at this time – just to keep an eye on any possible changes.
On a walk, Mick encountered a child and gave a warning growl. It’s unclear why, but an adult only home might be preferable for him.
Mick responds to “sit” and ”lie down.” He should be a quick study with other commands, as he loves praise and attention from his people.
Mick could join a home with other dogs and cats, and he would likely enjoy having another dog as a companion. He loves to play outside and take walks. A family willing to keep him active will help him to maintain a healthy weight. Mick will make a wonderful companion for the lucky family that chooses him.
Original: “He is a happy boy who wags his body and tail constantly.”
Mick came to be in MAESSR’s care because he was jumping up on his owner’s elderly mother. This big Delaware boy is very affectionate and loves attention! He just did not understand that his jumping could cause the elderly family member to fall and hurt herself.
Reliably housetrained, Mick will go to the door when he wants to go out and willingly goes out when the other resident dogs ask. Mick would actually prefer to be inside with his people, so his foster mom goes out into the yard with him to be sure he goes to the bathroom.
Mick does not want to go into the crate, but is crated for safety when his people are not home. At night, Mick sleeps on a cushioned bench at the foot of his foster parents’ bed. He’s quiet at night and eager to fit in, doing what his people want him to do and eager to please.
A counter-surfer, Mick will eat napkins and tissues if he can get them. He has chewed up a sock stolen from the laundry, too. Mick has not gotten into the trash, but his foster family has a lockable covered garbage can. Mick likes chewing on toys too, especially soft ones.
Mick plays with hard and soft toys and there are many to choose from in his foster home. He and the older resident dog growl at one another over toys, but the 3- year-old and he share toys. At breakfast and dinner, Mick eats in the kitchen away from the other dogs. His foster mom always observes at mealtime to avoid any issues. Mick’s energy level is medium.
Mick engages the resident dogs in play and touches noses with the resident cats but does not chase them. Mick does try to monopolize his foster mom’s time and attention by often getting between her and the resident dogs. He is not a high energy boy but he does enjoy playing.
Just as he interacts well with the resident dogs and cat, he responds appropriately with his foster family. Actually, he would love to be a lap dog! Since there is a lot of Mick to fit on a person’s lap, he has to be satisfied with sitting on the sofa with his head on his foster mom’s lap! He is a happy boy who wags his body and tail constantly.
At this point Mick’s command knowledge is limited to “sit.” He is good on leash walks and does not pull. Since he is so eager to please his people, Mick should be easy to train. Taking him to obedience lessons will benefit both his adoptive parents and Mick.
His foster parents were told that Mick gets carsick but they have not witnessed this first hand. On the morning of his transport, Mick was not fed his breakfast. He did fine on his ride to his foster home with the help of a dose of Dramamine.
With plenty of exercise and a healthy diet, his foster family is helping Mick get down to a healthier weight. Although Mick has not had his vet appointment yet nor has he needed to go to the groomer at this time, his foster parents suspect that he would be compliant and docile. They can touch him everywhere without issue.
Mick could join a home with other dogs and cats, He would also be content to receive all of the love and attention himself as an only dog. Even though he does not crave exercise, Mick loves to play outside and likes walks so an active forever family would be nice.
