When Max’s and his brother Harlan’s West Virginia owner and his wife separated, the combination of the owner’s long work hours and the brothers’ young age meant this concerned man knew the boys would need a new home and that MAESSR was the place to start. Max’s first night in his foster home was also the first night he’d spent away from his brother, and he was confused and whimpered a bit that night before settling into a routine.
He’s been completely housetrained but does not seem to have a signal to go out. With two senior males in the foster house, the door to the gated yard is opened frequently enough to suit his needs. He does like company when he goes out, usually grabbing a toy to entice the humans to come throw it for him. No digging, fence hopping or inappropriate chewing for this happy guy. Since he lives near some busy roads, he’s not trusted off leash, but, in his former home, he used to go on runs and hunting with his person and brother. He seems to have a soft mouth when picking things up, but his foster mom doesn’t know if he’ll recover birds; she does know he’s pretty interested in them! After a flock of geese flew over causing him to stand with his front feet a foot off the ground, his foster folks were amused when he next stared at an airplane higher overhead and seemed to shrug as he decided it wasn’t of interest.
Max knows “sit” but pulls a bit on leash, so a Gentle Leader leash would be good; however, he shows no aggression toward other humans or dogs when on leash. What a good boy!! He kicks back under his foster mom’s desk while she works, but his energy level is about what’s expected for his age—he’s always ready to go. He will trot several miles without tiring. This playful fellow will fetch toys, either plastic or stuffed, and is considering playing chase with the resident female hound. For some reason, he doesn’t care for the older male hound, grumbling occasionally when that foster brother gets too close; no incidents have happened despite the proximity. He’s been on several hikes with the resident male Springer and likes creek swimming and critter spotting.
Mr. M. loves his meals, and while humans can do whatever with the bowl, he is fed separately so no problems arise and the slower eating dogs can finish their food in peace. No counter-surfing or trash diving for this well-behaved guy, but since he used to sleep on his owner’s bed, he’d definitely enjoy that. He doesn’t love crates (minor whimpering at the unfairness of life), so he’s just gated in one room at night or while the humans are away. His delight at seeing the humans first thing in the morning or when they return is about the only time he jumps up, but he’s learning that “grab a toy and sit” is the right behavior instead.
MAESSR’s new young man is good in the car except for some initial whimpering with excitement at the potential adventure. He doesn’t mind the vet or having his ears cleaned and likes being brushed. He’s never had an official haircut—something else new ahead for happy-go-lucky Max.
Maximus always has a big grin on his face. He’d love to have active folks give him a lot to do, and while he doesn’t need another dog for company, he doesn’t mind the resident Springer male. Max is almost ready for his next big adventure. Spring is upon the land, and all those good outside smells will be calling to this youngster. Wouldn’t you like to help him explore?
