Max will celebrate his 1st birthday on 1/28/03. He was well taken care of by his previous owners and has had two homes since he was born. He came into rescue with his health records and all shots are up to date. He is a small-boned black and white Springer with a true puppy personality. He is energetic and fast as lightning. He is good with other dogs, but can be bold and approach them while they are eating or playing with toys and take things from them. So far, he has gotten away with that in his foster home but he has been growled at several times by all of the resident dogs, even the female. He is a bit pushy and would benefit from obedience training. He does like to mouth everything, even your arm and hand- but it is always in play mode. He has not been taught that human limbs are not rawhides. He is extremely friendly, and likes both his foster mom and dad equally. He does not like the cat and will chase the cat.
Max has lived with children ages, 2, 5 and 8 and does well with them, but as mentioned above he can be really rough in his play and a bit overwhelming. He also jumps up on people, but we are working on that. He seems to be housetrained most of the time, but has some accidents here and there due to his excitement level. Everything is a game and sometimes I don’t think he takes the time to do what he needs to do when he is outside. A consistent routine seems to helping with that.
A daily exercise program will be necessary for this dog. He is not quite ready to be the couch potato of the house. Daily walks and runs would be preferred with interaction and play with other dogs.
Max is very responsive, wags his tail all of the time and is a bundle of energy. He makes great eye contact and seems easy to train and correct, and likes to be in your lap and sleep by your side.
If you are excited about having a young healthy dog that will make a wonderful companion, this is the dog for you. He does not like the crate and will try to hurt himself trying to get out of it if put in one. He does better in a room and is much better with the company of another dog. He gets terrible anxiety when left alone, and this was the reason he was given to the shelter. With proper conditioning and reinforcement, this dog will overcome this as he gets older but he needs to be taught consistent rules, manners, and learn his boundaries.
Max loves toys and should have plenty around for his choosing, otherwise, I am sure he would find other things to play with that may not be quite as constructive. Every room in my house, even the attic has toys from Max and his play sprees. What can I say, he is a Springer puppy. He will try to take charge if allowed. He will need a positive, yet firm approach to his training regiment so he understands his place in the pecking order. Right now, he thinks he is the King of the domain and can’t understand why all of the other dogs aren’t quite as excited about things as he is. He really tries to share his enthusiasm with everyone. He is a very handsome confident young pup and will make a great companion.
Update:
Max has been adopted into a wonderful family that will take great care of him.
