Update 02/28/11:
Max continues to be such a wonderful family member that his foster parents have just fallen in love with him. He is absolutely perfect in the house and is always ready for love and attention. Every day he is even sweeter than the day before. If you are looking for a super Springer companion, Max is the one!
Update 01/12/11:
When his adoptive family encountered some major, unexpected financial events, Max was returned to MAESSR. While devastated to have to let such a fantastic boy go, his family knew that it was the right decision given the circumstances.
Max’s new foster family got the pleasant surprise of a wonderfully behaved, sweet boy. He quickly settled in and made himself at home with human and canine family members alike. Max is now happy, healthy, and ready for his forever home!
Original:
After Max’s owner had a stroke and was no longer able to live independently, MAESSR was contacted to find this good boy a new forever home.
Initially, this Delaware Springer came to foster care with some bare spots on his hind quarters thought to be from his nerves. After his health check-up, the vet determined Max just has dry skin. So, he is bathed once a week with a medicated shampoo and is doing very well. The bare spots are essentially gone but he does have some flaking still. The vet suggested adding some omega 3s like fish oil to his diet. Other than the minor dry skin, Max is in excellent health.
Max loves going on walks. At his foster home, he is usually off leash and does well. He goes off path but always stays in sight. He comes when called although he has selective hearing at times! Max positively loves water and swimming! His foster home has a trout stream and Max loves to go swimming regardless of the temperature. He also loves being dried off, wiggling and squirming to make sure he is rubbed all over.
In his original home, Max was allowed on the furniture, but this is against the house rules in his foster home. Occasionally, he will sneak onto the couch when no one is watching or climb into bed placing his head right on the pillows! When caught, Max can be easily redirected to the dog bed on the floor.
This watch dog barks at strangers or cars pulling into the driveway. Once the visitors are greeted, Max stops barking. He does bark at the neighbors’ cows, too, especially if they get too close to his trout stream! Despite his woofing, Max is friendly with both people and other dogs. All three dogs at the foster home get fed at the same time without problems. Even when soup bones are handed out, there is not any territorial growling. Quite food oriented, Max loves any kind of treat. He will sit, lie down, stand, and roll over for a treat. For the most part, Max does not counter-surf or trash pick. If going past the trash after food has been thrown away, he will do his best to get a look and maybe a taste, but normally he ignores the trash can in the kitchen.
Housetrained and dependable, Max has full run of the house when his foster parents are out. He loves to be in the company of his people, but does not need to be right on top of them like some dogs. Although he has only been around teenagers and adults, his foster parents are sure that he would be fine with kids, too, because he doesn’t jump up on people at all. He just goes over to them for a sniff and a pet. At night he sleeps on the floor next to his foster parents’ bed but will get up on the bed if allowed.
Max is a really docile, loyal Springer that responds well to direction. In new situations he can get over- stimulated and looks to his people for direction and reassurance. The first time in the car he had trouble settling, but after a few rides, he knows what is expected and easily settles.
Since Max enjoys being outside, he would love a forever family that has a yard and willing people who would play with him and take him for walks. Max has lots of love to share with you!
