Original: “He has a nice mellow 7-year-old energy level, initially greeting the humans with a big wag and a grin but then settling down.”
When Marky’s Virginia kennel owner passed away, the family contacted MAESSR about taking him and other dogs into its care.
Being a kennel dog, Marky wasn’t initially housetrained but with frequent trips outdoors and wearing a belly band to remind him that peeing inside was a no-no, he’s learning quickly. He’s only had one “almost” accident in his first week in his foster home. Averted in time, he started to lift a leg, got a firm “STOP,” and dropped it back down. He tends to pace if he needs to go out.
Marky is crate trained and sleeps quietly in a crate all night. While his foster mom works from home during the day, he usually self-crates with an open gate because the bed there is comfortable. Already turning into a Velcro dog, he gets up to follow his folks around.
This super sweet boy doesn’t counter-surf, get in the trash, or chew anything he shouldn’t. He has no aggression towards the resident sight hounds, though he doesn’t seem to understand that they have a different concept of personal space. He eats slowly so is separated from the hounds for meals. Keep a towel handy since he’s a slobber drinker if there’s a big bowl of water.
Marky loves leash walks and car rides for which he quickly settles in the back seat. He has a nice mellow 7-year-old energy level, initially greeting the humans with a big wag and a grin but then settling down. He doesn’t jump up when greeting. Good boy! When out in public, he’s initially shy about people approaching too quickly to greet him and tell him how lovely he is. When that happens, there are no growls; instead, he just parks himself on the other side of his foster mom.
Marky loves being brushed and doesn’t mind having his ears checked or feet touched. Initially a bit matted, he got some of his coat shaved down creating a few bald spots but with several baths and good food, he’s quickly starting to look better.
As far as his repertoire of commands. Marky only knows “come,” “wait,” and his new one– “go pee on that shrub.” But he’s smart and happy and ready to learn and please his humans.
He’s not yet playing with toys though that will probably change. He watches when the humans praise the other dogs for picking up squeaky toys and debates what the game is. He loves praise and is sensitive about a stern tone, looking sad as if to say he didn’t know any better yet. It’s unknown if he would swim but he does like standing in the baby pool to drink water.
When Marky went in to be neutered, he thought he was just off on a grand adventure including a Jeep ride and hanging out with lots of other dogs waiting in line. He was polite to the other pets and their humans and especially to that nice man who came to take him. They said he was really sweet and well behaved. What a good boy!
This adorable dog has been a pleasant surprise to his foster folks who weren’t sure what sort of manners he would have, but he settled in really quickly and is learning what’s expected of him, how to mimic the resident dogs (weekdays are lots of naps while folks work), is already good on leash and for car rides. He’ll soon be looking for a family of his own where he can continue to bloom.
