Original: Ms. Mara came into MAESSR’s care as an owner relinquishment. There were other dogs in her original home, and it seemed that Mara aspired to be the top dog. To keep harmony in the home, finding another family for Mara seemed best. Mara covets attention, wants a physical closeness to her people and loves to sit for petting. In her foster home, Mara lives with other dogs and is good with them, unless she is sitting on the floor with her foster family. Then she may grumble at the other dogs if they want to share in this quality time with the family. It’s as if she’s saying, “Hey guys, I really need all of these hugs for myself!”
When Mara arrived at her foster home, she had a lot of itchiness and possible skin allergies. Her food was switched to a fish and potato mix, and she is doing fine on it no need for medication to improve her condition. At her vet check, the only recommendation for care was that she have a dental soon.
Mara also needed a good grooming which her foster family undertook at home. That’s how they found out that she is afraid of basic care. After her foster mom cleaned her ears, Mara shook for almost a day when her foster mom came near. A few days later, a bath was equally traumatic. To get her long nails neatly trimmed, the vet was called upon at her vet check. With gentle and patient handling, it is hoped that Mara will come to enjoy grooming as many dogs do. It seems she just has not had too much experience with it.
Mara is housebroken, does not counter surf, trash pick, or chew. She comes when called and will sit on command. She does OK with her leash manners. She does like to sneak time in on the sofa but will get down when corrected. She is not crate trained and has not embraced her introduction to one in her foster home. She also prefers not to be left home alone and may shine the brightest with a family who is at home a good bit of the time, perhaps with senior citizens or someone who works from home.
Although Mara can get spooked by new or loud noises, her basic nature is very calm and easy going. She has a quiet and very sweet way about her. She does not require a lot of exercise and is not a ball player or toy monger. She is good with the teenager in her foster home but might find the activity of younger children a bit much. She would much rather have someone sit down to pet her than to play a game.
Devoted companionship is what Mara needs most from a family and is also the greatest gift that she can bring to her adopting family. She is a mature and low-key sweetheart who will thrive on having similar people to share her life. Are you the perfect match for Mara?!?
