Updated 08/12/2022: “Maisey went to her vet appointment and came out with flying colors!”
Maisey went to her vet appointment and came out with flying colors! She was a very good girl as she was brought up to date on her vaccinations and had blood drawn for her heartworm test. Everything’s looking great for this sweet girl to find her forever home! Someone will be awfully lucky to have Ms M added to the family!
Original:“Although she’s very high energy, indoors she’s very relaxed and happy to cuddle or sit at one’s feet.”Maisey came to MAESSR when her Virginia owners expressed concern that she didn’t get along with the family’s 9 year old Husky or their chickens. She seemed to get overly aroused over the chickens and then redirected this energy towards their Husky, causing Maisey to guard her resources from the older dog.
This beautiful, sweet girl is a Springer/Golden Retriever mix who has the wonderful characteristics of each of those breeds. She absolutely LOVES people and is protective of her own. Full of energy and very strong, Maisey always has her nose to the ground when outdoors and possesses a high prey drive. She is well-controlled and happy on a leash and harness, except if a rabbit or squirrel darts out in front of her; then, all she wants to do is give chase!
Maisey is housetrained, provided she’s taken outdoors consistently, and has full run of the house, even when her foster mom is out. To signal her need to go out, she tends to pant. She loves to cuddle on the couch and sleeps on her foster mom’s bed at night, although she’s also happy to be on the carpet next to the bed as well. She does not get up on the furniture or bed without being invited.
She’s crate-trained, loves to ride in the car and responds well to many basic commands—”sit,” “stay,” “lie down,” “wait,” “let’s go.” She also knows “leave it” and “off,” but doesn’t respond as well to them. She has displayed a desire to check out the counter if something is left out. She has never shown aggression or resource guarding towards people. Since she can get overly-playful, she may inadvertently knock over little ones. She has, however, growled at the resident cat when it approached her food bowl. Maisey and the cat have learned to co-exist quite well. Maisey was a bit too curious when she first met the cat and was hissed at and scratched! (She’d had no interaction with cats before being with her foster mom.)
Maisey has no separation anxiety, no chewing inappropriate articles, no submissive urination, no dog-dog aggression and barks only when she sees someone unknown on the premises. She is somewhat reluctant and shy when first meeting males, but warms up quickly. She is startled by loud noises, thunder and lightning, and is fearful of a vacuum cleaner. Maisey does get overly-excited and playful when meeting someone new, both on her walks and when a guest arrives at the house, and her foster mom is working on correcting that.
Grooming is something that Maisey enjoys. She likes being brushed and can be touched all over with no issues with ears or feet. Reportedly, Maisey has never been to a groomer, but does well at the vet.
Maisey LOVES to play fetch and will usually return and drop the ball or toy without being told. She also enjoys chasing a Frisbee, but as yet hasn’t caught one! She also amuses herself with tossing and shaking her toys.
Initially, Maisey wasn’t interested in eating anything at all. So, to entice her to eat her meals, her foster mom added chicken! Mealtime is no longer a problem! She looks for and loves eating tiny treats upon returning from successful walks and enjoys chewing on a bone as well as her toys; surprisingly, she has absolutely no interest in a Kong. Her favorite toys are a small stuffed lamb with a squeaker as well as a tug rope and her tennis ball.
Everyone who comes in contact with Maisey falls in love with her! Her forever family should provide her with lots of exercise on a regular basis as she is so very high energy when outdoors or playing indoors. A fenced-in yard would be perfect for Maisey! Although she’s very high energy, indoors she’s very relaxed and happy to cuddle or sit at one’s feet. There is not a “bad bone” in this sweetie’s body!
