Maggie is an English pointer who is a Springer wannabe is looking for the perfect home! When her New Jersey owner became ill and was no longer able to care for her and her housemate Shamus the ESS MAESSR came to the rescue for both dogs.
A very sensitive girl, Maggie was a little overwhelmed by all the changes occurring in her life when she first came to her foster home. Initially, she shied away from her foster parents when they first reached out to her, but once she was sure of them, she wanted to stay as near to them for as long as possible. This shyness did not last long, though; she quickly settled down into the household routine and, once she was assured she was in good hands, her personality began to shine. She is such a sweet and loving lady! She absolutely loves to sit next to her foster parents on the couch and snuggle up close to be petted. She especially loves to have her ears rubbed!
Housetrained, Maggie signals her need to go out by running around in circles. Her foster home does have a doggie door and although initially very shy of it, she learned to use within a day of being in foster care. Smart girl, Maggie! Not a barker, Maggie lets her foster parents that she is excited about something with her spinning happy dance. They quickly learned that Maggie LOVES ice cubes; she will stand patiently while her foster mom fills up glasses with ice knowing that she will get one at the end. She comes right up to the freezer whenever it is opened just in case an ice cube will be forthcoming! She knows where the treats are and has evidently been very spoiled at her last home as she weighs 67 pounds! She needs to lose about 10 pounds or so and has been getting thyroid medication which has helped her shed some weight in the past few months.
Although she does not appear to be crate-trained, this has not been a problem in her foster home since Maggie has excellent house manners. She and her Springer foster brothers stay in the gated family room when their foster parents are at work. Maggie knows sit and stay, but only comes when she wants to! Food has generally been a great motivator for her, though. When it comes to going for a walk, Maggie does well on the leash IF she wants to go with you. When she attended a festival in New Jersey recently, Maggie was exhausted by the end of the day having been a great goodwill ambassador for MAESSR. When her foster parents wanted to walk her back to the car, she did not want to walk anymore so she froze up like a rock. Even food treats did not entice her to move. Finally, her foster dad had to pick her up and put her over his shoulder to carry her to the car! That’s a stubborn, not so little (67lbs.) lady! She was great in the car and just lay down in the back for the whole time! Her foster parents have found that Maggie loves to go into the car on the trip out from home but needs help getting back IN the car on the way home!
From her time at the festival, it was clear that Maggie absolutely loves children as well as adults and other dogs! Her former owner stated she is good with cats, too. She is definitely a Velcro dog who is happiest when she is near her people. Maggie is now beginning to play with toys although her previous owner said she destroyed all the toys they gave her. She has not shown that tendency yet with her foster parents, but she does love to chew on stuffed toys. As far a grooming, Maggie’s coat is very short and she doesn’t require a whole lot of grooming. She has no problems with having her ears handled and she was great when the vet trimmed her nails.
MAESSR Springers aren’t the only ones who need loving, forever homes. Little Miss Maggie, the charming Springer wannabe needs one too. She’s a sweetie. Make her yours.
