Sweet Maggie is a young girl who we suspect may have escaped from a puppy mill. She demonstrates typical behaviors for a dog who has lived in a crate and never been socialized. She walks circles constantly. She also does not understand how to behave like a dog. However, at her foster home, her circles are getting much wider, we hope/expect them to cease. As well, she is observing the other dogs and imitating their behavior – a great sign.
When Maggie was first taken in by a family after her “escape,” she was underweight, matted, filthy and had a maggot infestation in her back leg. She is putting on weight and trying to learn a few commands. She has been groomed, now she has very short hair, but it will grow out. The maggots have been addressed and should no longer be an issue.
Maggie loves people. She is sweet, gentle, and wants to live in your lap. Her foster mom described her as the sweetest foster dog she has ever had. She will be in foster care at least until she recuperates from her spay surgery on September 19. Then she will be ready for her forever home.
Update: from her foster mom:
Maggie still circles but now we tell her no and she stops — at least for a bit. She watched Xena and now holds her paw out like a typical springer. She also learned to bark and jump and run with the pack.. And all the cool “bad dog” behaviors! She likes to play too. She knows sit, kennel (sometimes) and no. She is truly a sweet dog. We believe the other dogs give her confidence and she will do well with another dog preferably one not too much older so they can be best buds. She is eating really really well. Although still on the thin side. Gee, I enjoy fattening them up!
