Original: “If a Frisbee contest partner is what you’re looking for, then Maggie’s your girl.”
Maggie came to MAESSR from a Pennsylvania family that had two small boys and another older dog. They all lived in a townhouse with a small fenced yard. Maggie would become overly excited and noisy when she was not outside with the boys. If she were outside, but not in the same yard, she would jump the fence to join “her” kids. A calmer and quieter environment was thought to be a better alternative for her.
Miss Maggie is doing fine in her foster home. She is well-behaved in the house except for some occasional counter-surfing; but, since she’s a smart girl, that behavior has improved after consistent correction. No trash diving or inappropriate chewing for this lovely lady. She is housetrained and has not had to signal as she is let out fairly frequently. Although a crate is available to her, she has not used it except to retrieve a treat! Maggie does not resource guard but may be inclined to try to get at another dog’s food. She inhales treats rather than chewing them. This girl is always in a hurry.
When no one is home Maggie basically has the run of the main floor area (bedrooms are closed off) and with the company of her foster Springer brother has shown no signs of distress or destruction. She does help herself to the couch, but is very polite about it (she’s just a snuggler!). At night she sleeps at the foot of the bed and is very mannerly.
Maggie knows “sit,” “down,” and “stay.” She is currently working hard on improving these behaviors, particularly that troublesome “stay.” She’s also a good girl on the leash; she pulls a little bit sometimes, but generally is not bad. Off leash she runs around but comes when called. Hey, she most wants to be with her people! And Maggie is good in the car (though she does like to stick her head out the window) and at the vets.
This sweetheart loves toys that can be thrown and that she can fetch. She has an insatiable desire to retrieve and can run down and catch anything. The only problem is that she does not know when to stop. She will drop the toy in front of her person and bark incessantly until it is thrown again. Maggie could use some behavior modification in this area (unless her person has a strong arm and a lot of energy!). Throwing toys for her to fetch in the house is not a good idea—she can’t control herself once she starts retrieving something.
Maggie is an athletic, small Springer. If a Frisbee contest partner is what you’re looking for, then Maggie’s your girl. She is most happy when she is with her people and would do best not being left alone a lot. Although she is good with children of all ages, she might benefit from a calmer less excitable environment. Some exercise a couple times a day and hanging out with her people the rest of the time will make this pup a pretty happy sweet girl.
