Update 12/09/2015: “By the end of the appointment, the vet had fallen in love with Maggie and proclaimed her to be in perfect health.”
During a recent vet visit, Maggie put her charm on and thoroughly loved the attention she received from the staff. She received her heartworm test, had a microchip inserted, and had her nails clipped. A few treats helped to distract her while she was being poked and prodded, and she never yelped or seemed too stressed. By the end of the appointment, the vet had fallen in love with Maggie and proclaimed her to be in perfect health.Although her foster mom is truly going to miss this lovable puppy, she knows that Maggie is looking forward to finding her forever family. Are you ready for some sweet puppy kisses? Maggie’s ready to give them!
Original: “Maggie’s foster parents claim that this beautiful girl’s eyes are the windows to her soul…and what a great soul this creature has!”
Maggie’s family in Pennsylvania acquired her as a four-month old pup, having no knowledge of young puppies’ energy levels. With two young children ages three and seven at home, caring for Maggie’s needs proved daunting. The family very sadly decided to surrender her to MAESSR to help her find a family that can provide structure and exercise to her daily routine.
A very energetic and playful girl, Maggie is excitable and jumps up when greeted by people of all ages. Very young children would be knocked down by her exuberance; a family with older children would be best for her. This sweetie loves human attention, truly striving to be a “best friend.” She follows her people from room to room, placing her head on a lap, licking a face, and “nudging” her person for some loving. If she feels that she’s not getting the proper amount of attention, Maggie lets her foster parents know it! When they come home, Maggie acts as though she hasn’t seen them in years; she jumps up on them, gives enthusiastic kisses, runs for her toys and engages them in play.
Maggie has encountered quite a few dogs since joining her foster family. She is playful and non-aggressive with the ones that are her size or smaller, generally barking at larger dogs. Squirrels certainly get her attention, as she barks wildly at them.
Maggie is housetrained and has had no accidents in her foster home aside from a little excitable urination. This is usually when meeting someone she does not know. Maggie is currently walked five to six times per day, with at least two of her walks being two miles long. She loves her walks and will grab her leash or bark by the door when she wants to go out. Since Maggie will chew through nylon leashes, a leather leash is being used by her foster family. A harness is used, too, because this girl will pull. She can be trusted off lead, although when meeting other people on walks Maggie gets very excited and wants to jump up and greet them. No stranger has ever shunned her quest for attention and all have commented on what a beauty she is. If you love taking walks and are looking for an energetic and lovable pup, Maggie Mae is the girl for you!
Crate-trained, Maggie currently stays in one for up to four hours. She previously was trained to use a dog door as well as an invisible fence, respecting the boundaries set for her. At nighttime Maggie sleeps either in her crate or on a bed, sleeping about seven to eight hours per night. A crate is best for her when riding in a car; otherwise she’s very excitable during the ride.
This smart girl responds to her name and knows “sit” and “come.” She’s still learning “down” and “no,” but both are a work in progress! While she is not an excessive digger, she’s interested in counters; jumps on furniture; chews inappropriate items; and will chase, nip, bark, and tug while playing. She also chases and barks at the mop and vacuum, enjoys “recyclables,” and knows how to roll toilet paper off of the roll; in fact, she LOVES paper! In time, Maggie will learn the proper behaviors expected of a good Springer!
It is important for potential adopters to know that MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and under to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption. Maggie is a smart girl who will benefit greatly from her training.
Her foster home is near the shore and Maggie loves running and sniffing on the beach. Like most Springers, she loves to swim. While she’s not afraid of loud noises and she’s intrigued by the sound of a train, she does startle easily as she explores her world. When having fun at home, Maggie likes to play with toys that make noise or “crunch.” Her favorite plaything has a plastic bottle inside. She also loves Frisbees. In her foster home there are no other animals in the household. She does not guard her food, but she will guard her toys.
Maggie has been professionally groomed and did well. Her foster family can handle her feet and her ears without a problem.
For a forever home Maggie would ideally have a family with older children and a fenced yard. As do all puppies, she needs exercise in the form of walks and playtime to burn off excess puppy energy. She requires a loving family that is determined to give her the structure and training to help her become the best Springer she can be. Maggie’s foster parents claim that this beautiful girl’s eyes are the windows to her soul…and what a great soul this creature has! If you are willing to put in the time and energy, you will never regret adopting Maggie, as she will truly be a forever friend.
