Update 09/07/12:
One joy of fostering is seeing a dog’s health improve. Another is watching a dog’s unique personality emerge as it settles into love and security. The latest on Miss Maggie reflects the best of both.
Maggie’s family is seeing that she does not show any interest in toys. However, when outside, she loves to explore in the woods. Maggie can get “lost” in the brush and her foster mom finds it amusing to see the plants move while never seeing nor hearing the dog!
Maggie had an excellent report card from her recent visit to the groomer. This gal has a beautiful coat, but her foster mom had her shaved due to the heat and some matting around her belly and legs. She’ll grow out nicely by winter when having that Springer coat feels best.
Her vet appointment went very well; Maggie was a very good girl for the exam. Her right ear and right eye are looking better now that she has consistently been given her drops. Treatment for both continues with the possibility that eye drops will be lifelong. She also has a few cysts. None seem to be of long-term concern, though one on a hind leg did pop. To be on the safe side, medication will be used until it has healed.
On the lighter side……..a large bag of dental treats made its way from the kitchen counter to the foyer floor one day. As this is not the resident dogs’ MO, her foster mom has a sneaky suspicion Maggie may be a closet counter-surfer……. :). The bag was still intact…….good girl! Maggie knows that the trash is thrown away behind a cabinet door and she has yet to show any interest in that space………..another “good girl!”
While down the shore on holiday, some humans dared to walk on the porch while Maggie’s foster mom and dad were out. Apparently both resident dog and Maggie did bark at them through the sliding glass window. By contrast, Maggie’s foster mom has still not heard Maggie make a sound!
Maggie is doing well at daycare along with her resident brother. She is now getting used to 3 or 4 walks a day and is beginning to enjoy them. She must have a secret passion for road trips as she still tries to get in the car every time she goes outside.
Overall, Maggie is one of the best behaved and most loving dogs this foster family has met. Parting thoughts to Maggie’s prospective adopters……..be prepared to never have any privacy because she will follow you everywhere and ask for attention. She is a very gentle sweetheart!
Original:
Unfortunately for Maggie and her brother Jake, their owner in Pennsylvania developed serious medical issues, which left her unable to provide them with the attention they deserved. Fortunately for both dogs, she entrusted MAESSR to find them loving forever homes.
Maggie has been a perfect house guest since she arrived in her foster home. She and the resident dog have been respecting each other’s space, although Maggie has made it clear that she gets to hug her foster mom first and for a longer period of time! This little girl is so affectionate that she leans her face against her humans so that she is either cheek to cheek or nose to cheek with them for as long as they can stand it! Maggie would love to do nothing more than cuddle up on the sofa or the bed for the night with her people. Unfortunately for Maggie, her foster family does not allow dogs in the master bed or on the furniture. Maggie has graciously accepted that the dog bed on the floor of the bedroom is a good enough place for her — for now. Her foster family is still working on the sofa and chair issues, but she respectfully gets off when told “no.”
In her attempt to be as close to her foster family as possible, Maggie has pushed down a baby gate to gain access to them. According to her former owner, Maggie was adept at opening her crate and she would then free her brother, Jake! Smart girl! She will not, however, challenge any gates unless a human is on the other side :).
Maggie spent Labor Day Weekend at the shore and slept or stared out the window for the two hour car ride. She was a huge hit in the line at the ice cream store, where she let everyone get a turn at petting her.
While she is not currently living with children, Maggie grew up with a human brother who is now 15. She reportedly has lived with cats, but has not had any feline contact while in her foster home.
So far, Maggie has shown excellent house manners in her foster home. She has shown no signs of being a counter-surfer or trash-picker. She’s been a quiet girl, too; she hasn’t even barked since her arrival!
Her foster family has discovered that Maggie loves to ride in the car, and she is a gentle walker on leash. She likes to hunt for the resident chipmunk in the yard alongside the resident dog, but so far, that chipmunk has been able to stay safe!
Like many Springers, Maggie is prone to ear infections. She currently is receiving medication for her ears, as well as an ointment to treat dry eye in her right eye.
Maggie’s foster mom can’t think anything negative to say about this lovely lady! She has blended in so well with her new foster family, you would think she grew up there! Possessing such a sweet temperament, Maggie would fit in nicely with most families. If you’re looking for a real love bug, consider adding Maggie to your family.
