Update 11/11/11:
Macguire qualifies for MAESSR’s Home for the Holidays program. For dogs in this program, adoption fees will be waived through the end of the year. Help a special Springer’s wish come true – welcoming one into your home may be the most heartwarming gift of this holiday season!!
Sweet Macguire continues to impress all whom he meets with his lovely manners and good, even temperament. When the two year old he recently met thought he was a pony, Macguire humored him for awhile and then just played dead. This dead pony trick worked well, removing the toddler annoyance problem effectively. Smart boy, Macguire!
A follow-up appointment at the vet confirmed what Macguire’s foster mom knew: both his ear infections and his skin issues have cleared up! Macguire is looking good and will soon be ready to go to his forever home!
Original:
A divorce is not just disruptive to the people involved; pets can be impacted as well. When Macguire’s Pennsylvania owner got divorced, he had to move into an apartment and started a new job in another state. This meant that Macguire had to be boarded for long stretches at a time. Poor Macguire had always been used to a yard and having someone around continually, so his owner decided that it would be better for Macguire to become part of a family again – a new family. He contacted MAESSR to make this happen.
This sweet senior has been the easiest houseguest his foster mom has ever had. She never had a deaf foster dog before and was a bit nervous, but all of her fears were allayed. Most of the time, she forgets he is deaf because he’s such an easy-going guy. Communication is not much of a problem because Macguire responds to hand signals and he walks well on leash walks without pulling. Housetrained and responsible, Macguire whine barks to let his people know that he needs to go out or to let them know he is hungry. He had been crate-trained long ago, but this is not needed now. When his foster family is out of the house, Macguire and the resident, eight-month-old, male ESS stay in the kitchen or the family room with no problems.
Macguire has lovely house manners. He only gets on furniture if invited and gets down when told. He doesn’t counter-surf, but if food is left on a coffee table that is at his level, he might not be able to resist since he does love his food! Macguire doesn’t beg, but will sit patiently staring at you with his best “oh, please save me just a little” look while you eat. He does not get into the trash, chew inappropriately, or jump up on people. A typical Velcro boy, Macquire loves to be with his people and sleeps on his dog bed next to his parents’ bed. If a car trip is in the plan for the day, Maguire is very happy to go along. He loves car rides, especially if he can put his head out of the window.
One would never believe that Macguire is eleven years old! The resident Springer is an eight month old bundle of energy and Macguire hangs right in there with him. He is not aggressive at all with the puppy. When Macguire doesn’t feel like playing any more, he patiently keeps turning the other way when the pup jumps all over him until the pup gets the hint! He has been a wonderful playmate for the puppy and even lets this young sprout drag him around the yard on his leash! He just gives his foster mom a look as if to say, “Mom, do I really have to put up with this kid?” Macguire and the pup each have their own food bowl, but share a water bowl without a problem. They even take turns chewing on a big, hard bone and switch off readily.
Macguire is very cooperative at the groomer and at his vet check-up. He was fine having his nails cut, but was squirmy when he had his ears cleaned. This was probably due to an ear infection, though. The vet also found some itchy skin spots, too, so Macquire is being treated for both.
Are you ready to bring this spectacular guy into your family?
