Original: A Jersey boy, Macabee lived his entire life with a family with three children, ages one to four years old. Both parents worked full time and with three little children had little time to spend with him. So, they decided to relinquish Macabee to MAESSR so that he could find a family who would be able to give him the love and attention he deserves. Macabee had put on a bit of weight due to lack of exercise, but that’s melting right off in his foster home with all the activity in which he’s engaged.
Macabee reportedly is very good with children and toddlers, letting his former family’s children touch him all over with no complaints. In his foster home, Macabee seems to have no problem with new humans and gets along great with two other foster dogs and a resident terrier, tolerating everything from food to bed theft. He gets a bit rambunctious with his stuffed animals, pulling them from a box and tossing them every which way. He knows Springer play, encouraging the smaller Springer by crawling on his belly and pawing at her to get her to play.
Housetrained, Macabee has full run of the house. He’ll go into a crate but doesn’t care for it if left alone in the room. At night he sleeps soundly in his dog bed. When someone comes to the door, he barks. If he wants to go out to do his business, he stands by the door. A well-mannered boy, Macabee does not beg for food or counter surf, and he stays off the furniture. He is not a digger or a chewer, either.
Reported to have had only two weeks formal obedience training, Macabee impressed his foster mom by jogging exactly at her left knee on a loose leash for miles. Then, he further impressed her with his utter love of swimming, jumping into the water with a belly flop and sticking his entire head under while searching for leaves and sticks on the bottom of the deep water. He also knows sit, down, and a supervised stay. He rides well in the car, staying in his assigned area and watching quietly. His previous owner said that Macabee could be trusted off leash, but his foster mom hasn’t tested this yet. Reportedly, Macabee was sedated to go to the groomer and doesn’t like having his feet handled or ears cleaned. He doesn’t mind brushing, and his foster mom is working on handling his feet.
Ideally, from his foster mom’s point of view, Macabee would be placed in an active household where he can enjoy lots of hiking and swimming and interaction with life. He’s mellow enough that he doesn’t require it but has a real joy in being outside and involved with his human friends. He likes to please, seems intelligent, and might enjoy further obedience training. Macabee’s comic nature should also be mentioned. He’ll stretch out to wait at the base of the stairs with his legs kicked out behind him and a goofy smile on his face. Or he will drop from standing to a down as though his appendages had turned to jelly and then look up at you with his wagging stub of a tail as if he knows he’s nothing but cute!
With his classic Springer beauty, his interesting tricolor markings, and wonderful intelligent attitude, Macabee will make someone a fine companion.
