Update 05/08/2024: “Luna still is not a fan of being left alone, so a family that can spend a good amount of time with her to give her the exercise and companionship she needs would be ideal.”
Little Luna is doing so well in her foster home. When her foster parents are out of the house for longer periods, they continue to crate her. For a quick run to the store, they have left her out of the crate with her canine foster brother and she has been very good. At night Luna sleeps out of the crate on her bed in the bedroom and does not wake until her people are moving in the morning.
She seems to be housetrained now, which took about a week, and is doing very well outside on and off the leash. She does not chew inappropriately, but she is still a puppy and should be watched. Luna has started to play with toys and loves tennis balls and playing fetch. She loves to pick up a chewy toy and roll on her back while holding it in her paws and mouth. She can amuse herself for some time with a play toy.
Luna was spayed a few weeks ago. Post surgery she was a little uncomfortable but recovered very well. She did not like wearing her cone but did well with it off on short walks and while eating. She now is completely up to date with her vaccinations and is ready for her forever home.
Luna still is not a fan of being left alone, so a family that can spend a good amount of time with her to give her the exercise and companionship she needs would be ideal. This is one very cute, happy puppy. After a pretty rocky start to her life, Luna is going to make a lucky family very happy, too!
Original: “She loves people but she does not love being alone, even with her foster brother present.”
Luna was raised from puppyhood by a working, single mom with three growing children. She didn’t have access to a fenced yard so was kept inside and crated much of the time. Working full time and caring for her three young children and a Springer puppy proved too much for Luna’s owner. So, she contacted MAESSR knowing that a more suitable forever home could be found for her dear pup.
Although advertised as an English Springer, Luna appears to have some qualities of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. She is small for a Springer but large for a Cavalier. She is a perfect size.Rather shy at first in her foster home, she quickly came out of her shell with the help of the resident male Golden Retriever. They are best of pals now, going on walks together and napping together. She is very good at watching him and doing whatever he is doing. She has learned to come and get ice cubes — not because they taste good– but because that is what he does. She watches the neighbors walk by on the street out the front window with him and they sleep next to each other.
Luna was not housetrained when she arrived in foster care, probably due to her former owner’s hectic schedule. A smart little girl, Luna has been responding well to the very strict potty schedule in her foster home and she eliminates immediately when let outside. The occasional accidents that she would have in the house initially are very rare now. Her foster parents are starting to teach her to signal at the door and they are sure she will catch on quickly.
When her foster parents are out of the house and at bedtime (at least until she is thoroughly housetrained), they crate Luna. She loves people but she does not love being alone, even with her foster brother present. At night she sleeps well in the crate and gets very excited when her people let her out. Her foster parents tried leaving her alone in a room but she got upset and clawed at the door to open it. So, they will continue to use the crate until Luna gets comfortable with staying home alone.
Luna is overall a very good dog. She is learning these new house rules which are different than those in her previous home. Sleeping on the humans’ bed is a no-no, now. She is not allowed on the furniture except in the finished basement. She is mostly good with the new rules. Occasionally, her people find her camped on a chair or sofa, but she will hop down, when told. As with many dogs, she wants to be up close with her people for snuggle time. This is allowed in the basement where she sits on her parents’ laps. Luna is very calm and quiet when curled up next to her people.
Luna does not get into the trash; however, the resident dog does. So, their parents occasionally will find a tissue on the floor and they both will look like it jumped out on its own! Luna does not counter-surf and although she is food motivated, she does not beg unlike her foster brother. When meals are being prepared, they sit on the floor and quietly watch.
Luna does not chew inappropriately. She does not even pick up toys in the house. She does chase flower petals that blow in the wind and picks up small sticks in the park on her walks. When her foster parents have given her toys, she was very happy to offer them back to the resident dog without a care.
Luna “comes” when called and she can “sit” for a treat, most of the time. Please note that MAESSR will require her adoptive family to take her through a series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones like Luna – in homes that are committed to training and bonding with their pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. Luna will be a good student. Currently, she walks well on a leash, but only after she is tired. When she starts out on a walk, she is often too excited to walk without pulling but soon settles down. She gets a little too excited to meet people on a walk and often barks when they don’t come up to her. She can also get scared when people approach faster than she’d like. She is getting better at meeting people but this will take time as she is still very young and has a lot of energy.
Luna rides very well in the car. She wears a seat belt which confines her safely to the back seat. Her foster parents take her to as many stores as they can to socialize her and to get her used to riding in the car. Luna can jump up into and out of the family truck and she loves to go for a ride.
Luna seems to want affection more than toys and she is very content just to be with her people in the house where sleep is her favorite pastime.
A neighbor who owns a kennel has trimmed Luna’s nails and she was fine with that. She has not been to a groomer yet since she had not been up-to-date on vaccinations until now. She did great at the vet until he stuck a needle in her! Luckily, she has no medical issues and her ears are good so they have not needed cleaning yet.
Luna needs a forever home where she will get lots of exercise and attention. She would enjoy having a furry friend or children in her new home, too. Luna is used to walking three to four miles daily which makes her very calm and content in the house. So, she will need this exercise regime continued. Since she does not like being alone, working parents may want to take her to day care to ensure this growing puppy has all the exercise she needs. This little dog loves to run and having a yard where she can play is very important. Puppies take so much time and energy that anyone that adopts this lovely pup will need to have the time to spend with her. That time will be well rewarded as Luna is truly a love bug!
