Original: “Luna’s BIG pleasure is a plastic baby pool. Her routine: run around the yard, jump in the pool, hunker down, drink, repeat as needed.”
When Luna’s Virginia owner had a serious health problem and having a Springer pup around just added to the general confusion, the family contacted MAESSR to find this beautiful girl a new home.
Reportedly, this sweet youngster had some housetraining issues and was a bit of a wild gal, but she’s doing great in foster care with some structure to her life. She’s had only one recent accident inside—good girl! Though she doesn’t yet know how to signal that she needs to go out, if her humans walk around the fenced yard with her and say, “go pee,” she seems to understand and quickly does her business. She’ll also go on leash and loves walks to explore the neighborhood. She’s great in the car, not mouthy at all with anyone and enjoys playing with other dogs.
The first night in her new foster home, Luna was a bit insecure about being crated but went into the crate with a temporary foster who fortunately was indifferent about having company. She slept quietly until seven the next morning. She’s currently crated next to the other resident dogs and sleeps in until about 7 a.m.
Luna is learning what’s allowed as good doggie behavior. She loves to be on furniture and laps and was jumping up as a greeting. Now, she is learning that “sit” is the way to get praise and pets. She also knows “come” and is working on “off” and leash manners. Although she pulls a bit on leash with her excitement at seeing new things, if her foster mom says “wait,” she’ll turn around with smiling eyes and hang out until told to go on. Luna reportedly gets along with cats, but when she sees a bunny, she’ll stand on her hind legs and try to watch it run away. Not a trash diver, she doesn’t beg at the table yet, but given time, her foster mom is sure the residents will teach her how it’s done!! So far, she has only chewed dog toys and with a soft mouth, wasn’t very destructive at all.
MAESSR’s new girl loves playing fetch with toys and keep away with her foster sister, a two year old hound. She doesn’t guard toys or food or her humans. She and two of the resident dogs play musical bowls at meals while the one quick eater in the house is gated away. She enjoys being brushed and loves general interaction as well as grooming, scratching and playing. This love just doesn’t seem to have a mean bone in her body and is the standard active pup. She respects the senior dogs but engages any willing dogs in serious Springer type play, mouthing, butt checking and general chasing. Luna’s BIG pleasure is a plastic baby pool. Her routine: run around the yard, jump in the pool, hunker down, drink, repeat as needed. Even when the pool is empty, she’ll jump in and hunker down, grinning at any dog or human over the edge.
Luna’s intelligent and will probably soak up the puppy obedience classes that MAESSR requires for dogs under a year old. MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs under 1 year old to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption.
Little Looney Tunes Luna would love an active family who would give her attention, direction and hopefully a doggie friend for play. Humans are her number one focus but she does seem to enjoy another dog to hang out with and copy as she has her adventures.
Luna came to MAESSR on the eve of the first full moon in July, 2015; will she find her permanent home before the Blue Moon on July 31st and truly be a “Luna” girl? Are you ready to meet this challenge and welcome her into your home?
