Luke is a “divorce dog” from Delaware. When his owners split up, the father went to an apartment not allowing dogs, and the mother works long hours with Luke spending most of his day gated in the kitchen. The decision was made to turn him over to MAESSR to find him an appropriate home. Just by being around him for a short while, it was easy to tell that he was well loved and taught good manners. Reportedly, he lived with a cat, another dog, and one child.
This small, handsome guy settled in fairly quickly at his foster home, though for the first few days, kept looking at the car thinking he should probably go back soon. The other dogs sniffed him and vice-versa with no issues, so he fell into the group pretty easily. With resident dogs using the crates, Luke just sleeps on a rug at night near the rest. After a single incident of garbage-diving, the kitchen became off limits for nighttime. When his foster folks are away, he has free roam of the three rooms near where the other dogs are crated and hasn’t had any issues, though he’ll join the chorus with the humans get home. Luke will get on the sofa if invited but otherwise will just hang out on the floor near whatever human is around.
Reportedly, Luke would leak some urine when he got up from sleeping, both at night and during naps, so he was put on an inexpensive medicine. One pill per day seems to have taken care of the issue. Urinalysis results are expected soon to rule out an infection as well. Completely housetrained, Luke does like to have company go out in the yard with him while he does his business.
Luke is an easy foster dog, getting into very little trouble. He loves his walks! His foster parents report that he is good on a leash, and can likely be trusted off-leash as well. His prey-drive is fairly low, as evidenced by his all but ignoring the small animals he sees on his walks. Luke is good in the car, sitting quietly tethered in the back, and is not pushy with the resident dogs. He doesn’t have personal space issues and was surprised that the other dogs didn’t really like sharing a bed or crate. His previous owners said he would grumble at strange dogs and sometimes people on walks, but his foster folks haven’t seen this at all. He’s greeted kids and adults with a soft wag, and enjoys sniffing the dogs and hanging out on the sidewalk while folks talk.
Luke does eat his food quickly and is tethered during meals so that he doesn’t help the resident dogs with their food once he’s done. He is bit eager about receiving treats, so smaller children would need to be cautioned about keeping their hands flat when giving them. Luke doesn’t seem to know “sit” or “down” but will occasionally play with stuffed toys, enjoying tug of war and fetch, his fierce grumbling completely negated by the fact that his tail is wagging. He didn’t used to like going to be groomed, but a change in groomer where they treated him differently changed things around. At home, he likes being brushed.

Since he loves car rides, and is pretty portable at 40 pounds, travel would be just fine with him. His ideal evening would be hanging out on the sofa with his head on someone’s lap.
