Original: “When she does want attention, Lucky uses her ‘shake’ trick–she sits in front of her person, trying to give her paw until she does get attention!”
A MAESSR volunteer saw that Lucky’s Pennsylvania owner had listed her with an online service and lucky Lucky who had fairly recently had a litter of puppies was turned over to MAESSR. While she is a bit too slim at this point, Lucky has a very athletic build similar to her “cousin” the Brittany. She is lean and leggy, but very muscular.
MAESSR’s new girl is very social and enjoys being brushed…belly rubs are a particular favorite! Lucky is very good with other dogs and, for the most part, with cats. She does try to get the cats to play, but her version of play and the cats’ are not always the same. When the cats let her know this, she does respect them!
In spite of possibly spending some time tied up outside, Lucky is completely housetrained and sits by the door to let her family know she needs to go out. She knows “sit” and “down” but is somewhat selective when it comes to hearing “come.” Her house manners are fairly good; she does not get on the furniture and is very good at staying “out of the way.” She picks a spot in a room, away from foot traffic, and happily watches the world go by. When she does want attention, Lucky uses her “shake” trick–she sits in front of her person, trying to give her paw until she does get attention! However, trash cans, food on counters, and litter boxes are all readily investigated by this girl.
Outside, Lucky LOVES being in a fenced in yard…she can run, she can bark, she can chase squirrels!! The yard does need to be SECURELY fenced as this clever girl will find a weak spot if there is one! She actually squeezed under a chain link fence so she could go visiting with her foster mom…mom should know better than to leave this beauty behind!! Playing fetch is a good thing as far as Lucky is concerned…swimming, not so much. She is a strong young lady who does pull on her leash but is learning to walk nicely with a gentle leader.
This lovely girl loves HER people. With everyone else, she employs the bark first, ask questions later technique. She has bonded tightly with her family and, because of this, is leery of strangers and takes guarding her property very seriously. Her foster family is working to teach her that alerting is o.k., but barking has to stop when her foster mom says it must.
Lucky is still young and has much to learn about being a good companion dog. She was not socialized in certain areas and this lack causes her some anxiety. She needs to build her confidence with other people and stress less when “strangers” are around. She would benefit from a class, obedience or agility, to build her confidence and give her more focus, and be an outlet for her energy! Watch for updates as Miss Lucky benefits from the consistency, love, and training offered in her foster home.
