Updated 7/11/06: With two weeks in her foster home, Lucky continues to show impeccable house manners. She doesn’t jump on people, doesn’t get on furniture, doesn’t counter surf, doesn’t get in the trash, and doesn’t really beg at the table. She watches while people eat but will go lie down if told. She does alert the family when someone comes up the driveway or walks by. She stops barking when told. Lucky enjoys her walks and loves to ride in the car. Now that she is on a consistent low-calorie diet and is exercised, she’s lost 3+ pounds to date!
It was suspected that Lucky has a urinary tract infection and is being treated for that. Also improved is her submissive urination. Her foster family is quick to ask people to ignore Lucky and let her approach them. When this happens, Lucky gently approaches, sniffs and then gets her head patted. Lucky still ignores other dogs.
Lucky remains a sweet, gentle, lady. Her foster family feels anyone who adopts her will be fortunate, indeed.
Original: “Lady Luck” is a real sweetie. She entered MAESSR’s care after her original family had twins. The twins are now 8 months old, and this mature lady just didn’t want to deal with the enthusiasm and hands-on curiosity of such young children. At no time did she show aggression toward them, but she did on occasion growl when they acted up around her. She would likely do well with children who were older and have learned how to treat a dog.
Initially Lucky was shy around her foster family, keeping her tail low. She has since warmed up nicely and now is happy to prance around the neighborhood with her tail up. She is eagerly looking forward to what is around the next corner. She loves to walk, which is good because at 61 pounds, this pretty girl needs to slim down. She also rides well in the car.
Lucky has virtually no bad habits. She doesn’t counter surf, get in the trash, get on the furniture (but would if invited, she IS an ESS, after-all!), and she is not aggressive around her food or toys. She will go in a crate but has been left alone during the day with free run of the house without incident. Because she is submissive, she has on occasion reflexively urinated when meeting a stranger. This is her way of showing complete submission to humans. Her foster family is working on this by allowing Lucky to approach people rather than the other way around. It seems to be working, somewhat. She is housebroken and has not had an “accident” in the house.
Lucky didn’t mind her first bath and she was easy to home groom. She has experience going to the groomer as well, but if someone wants to try their hand at home grooming, Lucky will be patient with you while you work. She was a perfect lady, showed no resentment while being checked by the vet, and was declared to be extremely healthy. The staff thought she was just a love, commenting on how she appeared to be smiling. Her foster mom agrees, she does smile!
Without being rambunctious, Lucky is energetic. She is affectionate without being demanding. She is quiet but will still alert you when someone comes to the house. She gets along with other dogs she’s met but is okay being left alone. She’s just an all-around good gal. If you are lucky, she just might find her way to your house and heart.
