Meet Louie, a very uniquely colorful ESS in both looks and personality. Louie’s original owners from Virginia purchased him from a breeder when he was nine weeks old. They loved him dearly and made great progress with his early training, including a cool dance move. Unfortunately, due to a very serious and stressful family medical issue, they made the difficult decision to relinquish him to MAESSR.
Louie has been fully vetted, vaccinated and neutered. Because his rear dew claws were unattached and dangling, they were removed when he was neutered. When dew claws are dangling, they could get caught or torn resulting in injury to Louie.
Louie has never met a stranger and quickly made friends with his pack of six resident siblings, all MAESSR dogs aged 1 – 9 years old. Though still a bit puppy-clumsy and completely unaware of his strength, he’s very adept at jumping over and around his playmates during his favorite game of tag. These games can become rather wild, especially since he loves to body slam his mates, hence his nickname Baby Huey. Though funny to watch, his foster mom is working with him on a gentler approach to playing.
Louie definitely has the nose for hunting and is awed with all the local wildlife and scents; however, stamina hasn’t yet arrived in his wheelhouse. After a few great games of chase/ball/tug-of-war, he’s quite content with a long nap (snoring included) nestled with his buddies. This super lovable guy is interested in everything, is very easy going and non-demanding, and easily entertains himself if need be.
Because he thinks all food is his, he’s fed in a separate room where he’s learned to wait for his food and also to wait for the release signal to be given when the dog gate opens. Note that this is the only time he obeys dog gates. He’s very adept at simply knocking down the gate(s) whenever he wants to get through (Baby Huey indeed) and has even figured out how to actually open the gate doors.
Another of his epic talents is counter-surfing, as in world (vs. national) champion. No matter how high or far back on a counter food may be placed, he’ll grab it. This includes the Thanksgiving duck from its roasting pan. Creativity is his foster mom’s superpower and it has definitely been put to the test.
Louie originally slept in a crate in his foster mom’s bedroom, but due to excellent behavior, he quickly graduated to her bed with the rest of his buddies. As long as he’s kept on a schedule, Louie is housetrained and given free rein of the home when his foster mom is away.
Leash walking is a work in progress as he still pulls a tad. If wildlife is spotted, it’s time for lots of look-at-me treats. Potential adopters should note that MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and under to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 90 days of adoption.
This love is an absolute goofball without even trying. He’s so lovable that when he jumps up for attention, he’ll s-l-o-w-l-y slink down onto his back, melt onto the floor, and treasure every belly rub and lovin’ showered upon him. If you love a goofy puppy, Louie is the boy for you!
