Update 04/27/2022: “Louie may be eleven but he acts more like he is two.”
Louie is a returning MAESSR boy from Pennsylvania whose adoptive dad died and his adoptive mom was moving to a facility where dogs were not allowed.
Louie may be eleven but he acts more like he is two. He loves his toys, especially squeaky ones, but is not a fan of the plush ones. He is like the Energizer Bunny when he is out on a walk. He is very busy on leash, not pulling but sniffing. When he meets other people and dogs, he is interested in them but moves on quickly. It doesn’t appear that he knows any commands; when he was asked to “sit,” he goes to his crate! Hmmmm. Louie does know about car rides, though, and he is a good passenger.
In the house, Louie gets in trouble like a puppy. Too small to be a counter-surfer, he will get into the trash and chew on whatever he finds there. Although he is housetrained and uses the doggie door to go out into the yard, Louie will mark occasionally if another dog has urinated there before. Louie loves his crate and is kept there when his foster mom is out of the house. At night he sleeps in his crate currently but slept in bed with his previous owners. Louie is fed in his crate, too, and his foster mom reports that he is very polite and patient at mealtime. He does not resource guard his food or toys.
His foster home has resident cats and dogs and foster dogs in it. Louie gets along great with the cats but he does not interact with the other dogs except to mount them. MAESSR contacted the previous owner to get a little more information on this mounting behavior. The behavior happened twice when people visited overnight with their male neutered dogs with whom he was friendly. Louie was corrected for trying to mount the dogs. In the past, his family fostered dogs and they never had any mounting issues. The MAESSR Training Team has resources concerning how to control this mounting behavior.
Since Louie is very vocal and energetic, he would like an active forever family who would spend time with him outside walking and making sure he got lots of exercise. His new family could have older children but not toddlers who could easily be knocked over by Louie in his exuberance. Adopting a senior dog is a wonderful experience! Consider bringing Louie into your family.
Updated 03/14/2022: Louie was well loved in his home, playing with over 20 squeaky toys and sleeping in bed right next to his people.
Louie was adopted from MAESSR in 2017 and has been having a wonderful life with the adoptive couple who were also MAESSR volunteers. Unfortunately, the husband died suddenly at the first of this year and the wife is moving to a small apartment that doesn’t allow dogs. Louie is being returning to MAESSR.
Louie was well loved in his home, playing with over 20 squeaky toys and sleeping in bed right next to his people. He had access to a large backyard through a doggie door and he gleefully chases after his toys to get exercise.
He has just moved into foster care and his foster family will be reporting on his adjustment into a new home soon.
Original: “But, above all, Louie’s favorite place is on a lap getting tummy and ear scratches.”
Louie was purchased as a puppy and had always lived with the same Pennsylvania owner in the same house but, when that owner moved from the house to an apartment that did not allow dogs, MAESSR was asked for help. This handsome Cocker Spaniel with a full tail came into foster care with several toys, complete vet records, a crate, and some preventative meds. The first couple of days at the foster home, Louie would take toys into his crate. Now he doesn’t use the crate (except when no one is home). He is crate trained, but the door is left open.
Beautiful Louie is totally housetrained and lets one know when he needs to go out. He is learning to use a dog door and has access to a large fenced-in back yard. During the first few days in his new home, the foster parents needed to be with Louie when he was in the yard. Off leash seemed to be new to him. Now, he goes in the yard by himself or with the thirteen year old resident Springer. Louie, a youngster at almost seven, tries to play, but the older dog just looks at him in amusement.
This fine fellow has taken on house protection responsibility seriously. He will bark at visitors for a couple of minutes before going up for a pat. He LOVES to ride in the car and enjoys going on walks, although some leash work is needed. Louie loves to play with little ones and will even share his toys.
But, above all, Louie’s favorite place is on a lap getting tummy and ear scratches. All in all, he is very curious, funny, perky and a joy to be around and to have around. Happy days are ahead for this guy in his new home.
