“Girls Just Want to Have Fun” should be Lola’s theme song. Whether it is chasing a ball, playing tug of war, or carrying around a stuffed toy, Lola likes to be involved and active. She is extremely observant and curious about everything. She is a sweet girl who wants to be by her person’s side all the time. A typical Springer Spaniel puppy!
Lola’s first owner bought her for hunting. When she showed no interest, she was advertised on Craig’s List. Lola’s second owner, in Washington, D.C., relinquished her to MAESSR after she got in a fight with an older female who had been an only dog.
Lola is working on her manners, both in the house and on a leash. Note that MAESSR will require the adoptive family to take Miss Lola through a series of obedience classes within 90 days of adoption. MAESSR only places puppies – even older ones – in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience. MAESSR believes the decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment.
Lola is mostly housetrained but has the occasional accident because she does not seem to know how to ask to go out. When she starts getting restless, her family knows it’s time for a walk! Apparently she is used to being allowed up on the furniture, so keeping her off her parents’ bed is nearly impossible. Being there does calm her in the evening, and luckily she will sleep in her crate once the lights go out.
Lola knows “sit,” “down,” “come,” and “drop” (when she’s playing ball). She is working on not pulling on a leash when walking. However, if she sees a squirrel or a bunny, all bets are off! She eats in a room adjacent to the kitchen to keep her from gobbling down the cat food. She shows no evidence of resource guarding of her food.
Currently Lola is living with four cats– sensory overload for her. She likes them a little too much for the cats’ comfort. Lola just wants to play (and chase, of course) but her energy level is too much for these older cats. A dog-savvy cat would do just fine with Lola. She seems friendly to other dogs when she meets one on a walk, and her previous owner reported she was fine at the dog park. She has not encountered children at her foster home, so this is an unknown.
Lola is great in the car, especially with a doggie seat belt. She does not mind being brushed or having her wet paws wiped with a towel. She was also a hit at the vet’s office—members of the staff wanted to adopt her!!
All in all, Miss L is a super, super dog who, with training and supervision, will come into her own. This youngster really needs a fenced yard where she can run and chase balls without the worry of her chasing a distant critter she sees. Are you the family who can help her learn to be the best Springer girl she can be? Watch for further details as Lola meets her new vet and other dogs and maybe some kids.
