Meet Lily! She is the very first rescue that arrived in Boston Logan International Airport from Serbia. MAESSR has been working with a couple of people with international rescue contacts to rescue some Springers in Serbia. There are other Springers in need of homes. Lily arrived fully vetted and spayed and with her own passport! She flew in a spacious crate and was accompanied by a designated companion that made sure she went through U.S. customs without any problems.
Lily will be turn two years old on August 12. She is a beautiful liver and white fieldie with a full tail and lots of ticking. Apparently Lily did not have a heartworm test in her records so she was taken to her foster mom’s vet. She was the perfect patient and her heartworm test came back negative. It was discovered that Lily had a yeast infection in both ears and has begun treatment for that. She also had a non-contagious parasite. After two weeks of treatment, she will be rechecked and the procedure will be repeated in three months.
Lily is living with her foster mom and a four-legged foster brother, also is a beautiful English Springer Spaniel, who will turn 13 years old this fall. He recently lost his 11 year old canine sister quite suddenly and Lily has put the spring back into his step. She has been the perfect house guest at her new home. This pretty girl is extremely intelligent and has bonded to her foster mom quite quickly. Each day she finds something new that intrigues her. She has been getting acquainted with her surroundings and the fields that surround her home with her canine brother.
Because Lily is still settling in and because of the language barrier, her foster mom has taken things slowly. She has battled with jet lag like anybody would after traveling 13 hours. Mostly housetrained, Lily has had a few accidents while her foster mom tries to figure out her schedule. She has made improvements with this. Although she is crate trained, it has been unnecessary to use one with Lily. At night she sleeps with her foster mom or on a loveseat with her brother.
Like many Springers, Lily loves to surf the counters and she has a fetish for plastic dog food covers. Most days she can be found sleeping on the love seat with her brother or taking an occasional nap with her foster mom on the living room couch. Each day she is learning more commands and is recognizing her name. She comes when called, understands “no,” “down,” and “come”…and she totally understands that she is loved.
Lily is not food aggressive and takes treats without grabbing. She is slowly learning that she has toys to play with; this will come in time. She is just beginning to run when she is outside; this is still very new to her. On leash Lily is very good. The only time she will pull is when she is getting close to the door to come back into the house. She loves to ride in the car, staying in the back seat and enjoying looking out the windows.
When meeting her foster mom’s friends and neighbors, Lily has been well-behaved. She has only met a neighbor’s young grandchildren once, but was fine with them. Her foster mom believes that Lily would make a wonderful addition to a family with young children. She has not been exposed to cats.
Lily’s long journey to find her forever home is almost over. She’s patiently waiting for that special family to call her own.
