Original: The miraculous birth of these beautiful puppies began on July 16 and 17, 2006. Gracie had shown the first signs of labor the previous evening when she refused her dinner and began panting very hard. The next morning her foster parents woke up to a loud scratching.
Gracie was trying to nest in the bedroom closet. The whelping was close at hand! The family quickly prepared for the birth. The first pup made its appearance a 8:47 PM and the last put arrived at 12:40 PM. The entire litter was black and white. They were all healthy and vigorous Gracie, a seasoned dam, went right to work nursing and nurturing her brood.
All of the pups had their dew claws and tails clipped on July 19, 2006. Their eyes all opened between the 15th and 20th day. The ears were open by August 7th. They went outside in an x-pen for their first fresh air on August 12th. The foster family kept a close watch on them while in the x-pen which is located on the deck of their home. They loved the extra space to move around and frolic in. Weaning has begun. The first meal of puppy gruel was served on August 13th. They ate like grown up dogs and really enjoyed walking and playing in the food.
Lexington, a black and white female, was the first born arriving at 8:47 PM on July 16th. She has beautiful markings. Her blaze widens at the top of her head and actually forms a heart. She has a small white patch on her back. Lexington is also the largest puppy in the litter. She weighed 12 ounces at birth and as of this writing she is up to 47 ounces.
Lexington has a friendly personality and loves playing with her litter mates. She can be a couch potato at times, but she also asserts herself when being nursed or fed puppy gruel. Lexington will come when she is called over to the side of the whelping box.
