Updated 8/7/07: Lexi continues to do really well in her foster home. Her stay has been lengthened only to determine if she had been previously spayed. There had been mixed signals over the months, so after a full review by her vet, the decision was made to do the procedure to be certain. She’s scheduled for that today and then will be ready for her forever home.
Adjusting to being a family dog has come easily for Lexi. She loves to cuddle and is an attention hound! She has started to play with the other dogs in the house and is increasingly friendly with folks who drop by. Lexi is camera shy but a really beautiful girl. Her only flaw is her missing ear. You see, somewhere in her more distant past, Lexi had an ear amputated when someone put a rubber band on the ear and didn’t remove it. This has not affected her hearing; try saying the word “cookie” and she can hear you from a mile away! Nor has it affected her looks. The hair grows over the amputated part, making it look like one ear is shorter than the other– absolutely nothing to be shy about. Nevertheless, Lexi is hoping for a family who would rather cuddle with her than ask her to pose for the family portrait! Can you make her wish come true?
Updated 6/26/07: “Lexi is a great dog!” Such simple but assuring words to hear from Lexi’s fostering family. She has adjusted well to the move into their home and indoor life. The only thing between her and an adopting family is determining if Lexi has been spayed. It seemed that she was coming in heat when she first arrived, but the next few weeks were inconclusive. Another visit to the vet is on her schedule for this week.
In the meanwhile, Lexi loves every chance to ride in the car and sleeping bedside all through the nights. Likely due to lack of training, there are a few areas that Lexi could use some help with. She still pulls on her leash and needs continuing guidance to improve her skill at this. She is a counter surfer and her foster parents are definitely working on that with her.
Lexi has had a few squabbles with a 15-year-old dog in the home. When that happens, the younger dogs come to the aid of the senior dog. There have been some loud rumblings, but nothing more than vocal exchanges in the pack. Lexi did get into the senior’s food bowl once, though, and when her foster dad tried to retrieve it, Lexi was a bit less than lady-like. To counter this and instill improved manners, her foster parents have started a daily exercise with her. One of them gives Lexi her food bowl and then takes it away. Several repetitions in each short session are all there is to it. Lexi is doing fine with this training and it will continue while she is with them.
As was said at the beginning, Lexi is a great dog. She loves everyone and is almost ready for people to call her very own. She is adaptable and trainable and mostly wants people who will let her live closely with them and tell her what a great gal she is!
Original: Lexi was relinquished to MAESSR by her owner who was having housing and health difficulties. He decided it would be in Lexi’s best interest to find her a good home, so he contacted MAESSR.
Lexi had been living outside in her previous owner’s backyard. As such, her coat is very bleached out. Right now, she is sporting a very blonde buzz cut. She enjoyed her bath and behaved well for her grooming.
Lexi is housebroken and uses a doggie door during the day if she needs to go out to relieve herself. She is crate trained and even eats her meals in her crate. She shows no signs of food aggression. Her foster mom has petted her when she was eating and Lexi showed no response to this attention during meal time.
She has some separation issues and cries when left alone. As this happens during the night, she has been sleeping on a doggie bed in the master bedroom. She really likes to be with her people. Lexi loves everyone she meets. Her tail –long but docked– wags all the time. She gets along very well with the other resident dogs also.
Lexi’s tail would really be wagging if you found a place for her in your family. She has lots of love to share.
