Updated 1/11/07: Lewie is a very lucky boy……..well, “gentleman” would be more appropriate for this older fellow. He checked out well with the vet at his exam but had a number of fatty tumors. Often fatty tumors are benign masses and, if not bothering the dog, they are left alone. Unfortunately, Lewie’s largest one was on his chest and about the size of a softball. It was definitely something he was willing to get shed of. He came through his surgery well and while under, the vet removed 3 other lumps and did some necessary dental work. As he has healed from surgery, Lewie is acting more and more like a younger dog.
Lewie is a very sweet and loving dog who is so easy to live with. He is deaf but, when you get his attention with a wave, he comes running. In the mornings, one of the resident dogs in his foster home has been trotting over to him and nudging him when she sees he is still sleeping in. It’s as if she is saying, “Come on. We are going downstairs!” He loves to be rubbed and gives very sweet kisses. His manners in the house and around people are just what one would expect from a mature springer. He has been getting to go to his foster mom’s place of business on some work days and has captured the hearts of many he has met. When his stitches come out, Lewie will be ready to pick the heart of one loving family and settle into their home. Will that heart and home be yours?
Original: At 13 years young, Lewie is a healthy, athletic and spry springer. He has been deaf for the last 2 or 3 years but responds very well to hand signals and doesn’t let this diminish his enjoyment of daily activity at all. He will be visiting the vet with his foster mom to get checked out, but an updating of his vaccines is all that is anticipated. At 45 pounds Lewie is at a very nice weight and reflects the good care he has had with his relinquishing family.
Lewie has come into his MAESSR foster home because he was owned by two elderly folks who could no longer take care of him. His mom’s vision is compromised and she was at increasing risk of tripping over Lewie who likes to stay underfoot. Lewie’s dad has developed arthritis and can’t get him out on his beloved walks. Despite all of Lewie’s good traits, his parents knew that he deserves a better home than they can provide him now.
Lewie is reportedly a wonderful, happy, friendly fellow who loves everyone and every other dog he has come in contact with. He has never been exposed to cats so that is an unknown. He has been around his owners’ grandchildren and great grandchildren with no issues whatsoever. Their experience with Lewie over the years is that he does not have a mean bone in his body.
As is common with healthy springer seniors, Lewie still has a lot of energy and would love to be able to play fetch and swim again. In his previous home he was not a barker, chewer, fence jumper nor did he have any other bad habits. He is fully housebroken and has enjoyed the run of his home for the past 12 years. He rides well in a car too.
Lewie will share the holidays with his foster family. As they get better acquainted with him and complete his vetting, more information will be added on this sterling senior.
