Update 05/31/10:
Leroy has continued to be a gem in his foster home. His foster family loves his zest for life. They also see Leroy needs a family that will take control and not allow him to “run the show” in their home. This is a dog that is responsive to consistent leadership and limits set by the humans in his life. He gets a little anxious when he does not feel that his companion(s) has everything under control. In his foster home, Leroy has learned that he must mind or no one will play ball with him, so they get along well.
Leroy would benefit from an obedience class with his adopting family. He loves to learn and he desperately wants to please. A class would hasten his understanding of what new people in his life are asking of him and would bolster his confidence in their leadership. Though not a requirement, a commitment to some structured learning with Leroy would be a great way to begin with him and fun along the way as well!
Leroy loves to be cuddled and hugged. He is extremely good for ear cleanings or any other type of grooming work you do to him. If you are looking for a big boy with lots of love to share, please consider Leroy.
Original:
When there was continued fighting between Leroy and a ten year old Springer in his North Carolina home, Leroy was relinquished to MAESSR. He never had a problem with other dogs and we are not sure which of the dogs was starting the fights. Leroy originally went to a foster home with many other dogs and got along fantastically with each of them. He was moved to a quieter foster home to ensure that he could behave in that environment also and he has mostly.
When it comes to toys and rawhides, this boy knows what he wants and he’ll steal it right out of another dog’s mouth! Also, Leroy is a bit of a food pig, trying to eat everyone’s food and his own. His foster family is making really good progress with that issue. If his foster mom tells him no, he reacts instantly. He settles down very quickly in a crate or behind a gate. As to barking, Leroy is quiet, not a barking leader; however, if the other dogs start barking, he starts howling! When it comes time for a spa treatment, he is a really good boy when his foster mom brushes him and cleans his ears.
Leroy is crate trained and housetrained. He is a tall boy so that gives him a distinct advantage for counter-surfing which he was caught doing in his first foster home. His foster mom’s efforts in working with him on this issue paid off because he has not counter-surfed in his second foster home. In the past he has had some obedience training since he knows sit, down, stay, no, shake, drop it, and come. His leash walking has improved considerably. Although he was initially a real puller, now he just tugs for the first five minutes before settling down nicely. Leroy loves to ride in the car, but his FAVORITE pastimes are playing ball and going swimming. This boy is a ball chasing machine!
Although Leroy has been good with people as young as five, he probably needs a permanent home with older children due to Leroy thinking he is the size of a small poodle. He gets a bit carried away. In contrast to how well he does with people, Leroy would probably not be good with cats. When the neighbor lets her cat outside, Leroy acts as it he would like to eat it for lunch! When he first meets a new dog, Leroy is not aggressive; he just wags his tail and is quiet.
Leroy is quite a character who loves people and being with them. He has such a fun zest for life that he is going to bring a lot of fun into someone’s life!
