Sweet, shy Leo was found as a stray and was taken to a rural Pennsylvania shelter. Four days passed and nobody came looking for him, so the shelter staff called MAESSR for help.
Leo is a very shy and timid boy that needs to warm up to humans on his terms and in his own time. If given a chance, he will try to hide in either a closet or the bathroom. To prevent this hiding, his foster family has made sure that all of the doors are closed to rooms other than where they are. During his first few days at his foster home, he would just hide in the corner of the living room and would only come out when it was either feeding time or time to go outside. While food bowls were being filled, Leo would look around for assurance that he was allowed to eat and that nobody was going to take his food away or eat it before he did. He quickly learned that if he didn’t eat his food right away, the resident dogs or the other foster dog would just help themselves! Now, Leo has a great appetite! He eats his food and then looks to see if anybody else has left any so that he may finish it for them! Leo is also a few pounds overweight so his foster parents are working on getting the extra pounds off. Not fond of the cold weather and snow, he does what he needs to do when it is time to go outside and then immediately goes back inside, curling up in front of the heater vent.
With wonderful house manners, Leo does not counter-surf or trash pick and he is completely housebroken. He does like to lie on the couch where the dogs are permitted, but he will immediately get down if told to do so and will go to any available dog bed and be content. This young boy is currently residing with four other dogs (three males and one female) and three cats and he gets along wonderfully with all of them. Leo has also shown no aggressions towards his food or toys, if he has something and somebody else wants it he just walks away. Leo is also not a barker or a jumper. What a good boy! On a recent visit to the vet Leo encountered a St. Bernard and a collie – both of which he greeted with a wagging tail.
Although Leo is shy with people, he has liked everybody that he has met. He also likes to play with anything that squeaks! When it is time for a walk, Leo will sit patiently and wait his turn to have his leash put on. Then, he walks very nicely without pulling. If you would like to go for a car ride and need company, Leo will be happy to go with you; however, he does think that he should be allowed to drive! So, when on rides and adventures, it is best to have Leo harnessed in the back seat.
Leo does not mind getting a bath and loves to be brushed. He is also okay with having his ears cleaned, but he was not happy when foster mom tried to trim his nails. Leo may have just been scared when foster mom attempted to clip his nails because he let the vet tech clipped them with no problem.
Every day, Leo’s true, sweet Springer personality continues to shine through more and more. He has even become quite the Velcro boy! Leo would love to stick to you!
