Update 11/16/08:
What a sweetheart Lenni is. He knows sit and his family is working on stay with him. He is pretty good about coming when called, although like most young ones, he gets distracted and has selective hearing at times. He understands “outside” and runs to the door. When he wants to go out, he will go to the door and sit. He is having some accidents, but he and his family are working on it.
Lenni is walking off leash with his 2 big sisters. He is great about not going too far away and coming back when called for a cookie treat. His family is also working on walking him with a Gentle Leader head halter. Lenni doesn’t love but it is helping him to learn on-leash walking.
Playtime is much to his liking. He and his two-and-a-half-year old sister get along famously, and Lenni even has his ten-year-old sister playing with him on occasion now. He is persistent!! He loves chasing tennis balls and bringing them back and takes every toy out of the basket!
Lenni is finally over his ailments. His retest for coccidia came back clean and he has no ill effects from the campy bacteria and kennel cough. The vet gave him the OK to be around other dogs and small children and he has made the most of the chance. He met his foster mom’s grand puppies, one grumpy old man and one frisky cocker whom he had a ball with. Lenni also met a 19-month-old granddaughter. He is a typically bouncy ESS but did remarkably well around her. He was a little jumpy but also backed off when she would put her hands up. He seemed to realize she is little like him! His foster mom feels Lenni would definitely benefit from active young children to play with and other dogs in his adopting home.
Lenni loves everyone and loves to snuggle. He is crate-trained. He is crated during the day when everyone is at work and sleeps in the crate at night in the bedroom by his sisters. He likes to ride in a car. Lenni will finish his basic vetting very soon and be ready to have a forever family. If your family is ready for a very special youngster, Lenni is the one.
Original:
After a raid on a puppy mill, the Philadelphia SPCA took in over 150 animals due to sickness or unsanitary living conditions where animals were living in their own waste. Among this number were five Springer puppies that were approximately twelve weeks old. The shelter staff worked very hard to get as many animals as possible out of the shelter and into rescue groups as quickly as possible. MAESSR was more than happy to oblige! There is nothing cuter than a Springer puppy and foster families quickly rallied to take in these pups. Who doesn’t like puppy breath?!
Some MAESSR foster moms went to the shelter to pick up the puppies that were happy to cuddle and play! They were whisked away to their foster homes and started on their road to recovery. These little puppies smelled as if they had been living in a pig pen, but their MAESSR foster homes got them cleaned up and smelling like puppies again! They are feisty, happy and funny pups! Typical of Springers, they love being with their people and love to wrestle with other dogs!
One of the little male puppies is Lenape or Lenni as his foster family affectionately calls him. He is 16.5 pounds of snuggling, Springer love! Very playful and inquisitive, Lenni is getting along famously with the resident two year old chocolate lab and he is even tolerated by his other canine foster sister, a ten year old lab mix. Lenni likes to play fetch with tennis balls and will bring the ball back to you to throw again and again.
Lenape’s housetraining is coming along quite well. He has had only one accident in his foster home and that was on his first day there. His foster family takes him out often and he will go to the door himself and talk to let then know that he needs to go out. When his is crated during the day while his family is out, he complains rather loudly, but at night he settles down in his crate right away. His crate is placed in his foster parents’ bedroom at night so Lenni happily gets to be with his “pack” then. Lenni keeps his crate clean and dry whenever he is placed there. As far as commands, he already knows sit and is pretty good about coming when he is called. Lenni seems to like to ride in the car and is a good passenger.
Due to his puppy mill origins, Lenni came into foster care with some health problems. He tested positive for campylobacteriosis, coccidian, and kennel cough, so he is being treated with different antibiotics to deal with these conditions, one at a time. Then, he will catch up on vaccinations and be neutered. When examining Lenni , the vet noted that his lungs sound clear although his trachea is still swollen and sore.
Watch for more on this sweet puppy as his health improves and he thrives in foster care!
