Original: “Leftie’s leash manners are mostly good, but he does pull when he gets excited about squirrels, rabbits, and birds – after all, he is a Springer puppy!”
Leftie came into MAESSR’s care when a Springer breeder in Maryland developed serious health problems and had to rehome his dogs.
This youngster is a shy, timid boy around new people, but he quickly warms up and is very sweet! Leftie has not met children or cats yet, but he gets along famously with the four-year old resident male Springer. They love playing with each other.
Leftie’s leash manners are mostly good, but he does pull when he gets excited about squirrels, rabbits, and birds – after all, he is a Springer puppy! Leftie currently walks about 3.5 miles daily with his foster mom and the resident pup. If they come across a stranger, he is shy and hides behind his foster mom. This new world is so different for him.
At night and when his foster mom is not home, Leftie is crated. He is almost housetrained. There have been a few accidents in the house, but when taken outside Leftie listens to directions and goes potty. Good boy!
In the short time at his foster home, Leftie has learned several commands, such as “sit” and “let’s go.” He is hesitant getting into the car, but after several trips to the local park he is getting more comfortable getting in and out of the car.
Leftie is a counter-surfer, but his foster mom is working to reform that behavior. Still a puppy, he is a chewer and has attempted to chew on his foster mom’s office chair and the sofa. Once corrected and redirected to a toy, he is happy to chew on the toy and does not return to the inappropriate item.
Potential adopters should note that MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and under to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption. Since Leftie is eager to please his people, he should be a star pupil.
Leftie will be visiting the vet next month to complete his vaccinations and for neutering. After his recovery, he’ll be ready to join his forever home. Just a delightful young pup, Leftie will make a wonderful companion for a family willing to keep him active, teach him about his new world, and help him become the best Springer boy he can be.
