Update 07/22/09: Lear has recovered nicely from his first heartworm treatment. His infestation was worse than originally thought, so his treatment will not be completed until mid-August. Lear’s energy level has increased quite a bit with only one treatment, and he has turned into a very active boy. He loves to run around the pastures and chase the birds.
His house manners continue to be very good. Lear even sits patiently while his foster mom feeds the senior foster who requires a little extra attention. Although he doesn’t play with toys yet, he will chase after Frisbees in the yard, running round and round with great joy.
This boy is going to require an active home with lots of exercise and interesting things to do. In exchange he will give lots of Springer kisses and love. More on Lear to come.
Original: Lear came to MAESSR from a shelter in South Carolina where they unable to treat him for his heartworm infestation and yet did not want to put him down. So, MAESSR was contacted. Lear’s life left its tragic path and began to look to a positive future.
His foster mom is finding Lear to be a very kind, gentle boy who gets along well with other dogs and, for the most part, he is not interested in the resident cats or ones he comes in direct contact with outside. A real people pup, Lear just loves every adult he has met in foster care; he has not met any children so far, though. Since he is heartworm positive, at this point his energy level is not very high, but he will attempt to play with the other foster dogs; however, at this point, he doesn’t last long. When he does play, he is very gentle with the other two dogs that are considerably smaller.
Lear has impeccable house manners. He is well housetrained and will signal to indicate when he needs to go out. Although he is not excited to go into his crate, once there he is quiet and well behaved. In the kitchen he does not counter-surf or disturb the trash. Most of the time he has free run of the house, with no problems, but if left for several hours, he will be found asleep on the couch! At night he sleeps in a crate in his foster mom’s room.
When it is time for a walk, Lear does well on a leash, but also can be trusted off leash as he truly is a Velcro Springer who is not going to get out of his foster mom’s sight for more than a minute! When it is time to go for a ride in the car, Lear is a willing passenger, sitting in the back seat watching the scenery.
Although he doesn’t seem to know many commands, Lear does listen and attempts of figure out what his humans want him to do. He does know sit and he waits at door before going out. To let his foster mom know what he wants he often takes the hem of her shirt and gently leads her to the door or cookie jar to indicate his desires! He has a very soft mouth even when taking a treat.
His foster mom is looking forward to the return of his health to see what this big guy is going to be like! She thinks he is going to be a really interesting character, full of life, fun and a devoted companion. Watch to see if she is correct!
