This pretty Pennsylvanian’s story is an all-too-familiar one. Layla was an only dog for 4 years, then came a child into her family, then another dog and recently a second child was on the way. Along with these factors, her family was living in a small home and lost an income. Because Layla was the higher maintenance dog of two, her family made the decision to ask MAESSR for help with re-homing her.
Since Layla has been in her foster home, she has been an absolute joy and breeze to live with. Layla has impeccable manners. She’s completely house-trained and will go to the door and scratch when she needs to go outside. The opportunity to trash dive has not been presented so that is unknown. Layla has followed the lead of one of the resident dogs in the attempt to counter-surf but, since she is short and was unable to see if there was anything good worth surfing for, she has only done this once. Layla has free run of the house because she is not a chewer and does not take things that do not belong to her. She sleeps quietly on her own bed at night in her foster mom’s bedroom but would no doubt enjoy sleeping in bed with her humans.
Currently Layla is residing with five resident dogs, both males and females, and they all get along nicely. Layla is a little weary of the one resident male and that is only because he is so much bigger than her! She is often found engaged in play with the resident 2- and 5- year-old Springers and she LOVES her toys!
When going for rides in the car, Layla can be a bit nervous at first but settles within a few minutes. It has been a very long time since she has been on a leash or even wore a collar so her foster mom is working to refresh this training. Layla has quickly become used to wearing a collar and, for now, a harness is being used for walks. Time and consistency should improve this as Layla loves to go for walks.
This is also one very smart girl. Layla knows a multitude of commands and tricks that include: sit, stay, paw, down, rollover and heel. Her special tricks are closing the door. Yes, if the door is open and you tell her to close it, she does it. Amazing! And, she also will get the mail! These tricks are very helpful if you tend to be a slug at times!
Layla lived with a 4-year-old toddler in her past home and did very well with him. She will fuss, though, if a child is doing something that is making her unhappy. If there are children in Layla’s new home, it would probably be best if they are at least the age of 8 and know how to properly treat a dog. It was reported by her previous owners that Layla had some food aggression, but that behavior has not been noticed in foster care; her foster mom can stand and pet her the entire time Layla is eating with no issue. To keep Layla comfortable, she is fed separately from the resident dogs who make great sport of stealing from one another. She does love her treats and will gently take them from your hand.
This cutie recently went to the groomer and was a very good girl. She was shaved down so she will have a beautiful new coat growing in soon. Layla’s behavior at the vet’s office was also very good. Through all of the poking and prodding, all she did was make a little noise to let them know that she was noticing. Treatment for Lyme disease is underway and her only health issue
All Layla wants is to be loved and to please her humans. She is a true Velcro springer. Watch for more on this sweetheart in the weeks to come…
