Update 01/04/10:
A mini-milestone! Laser has completed treatment for heartworms. With this health worry behind him, he will be neutered in a couple of weeks, his last step before becoming available for adoption.
Laser recently got a complete spa treatment and was excellent for the entire process. Even getting the hair trimmed between the pads of his feet was OK by him. Actually, he fell asleep from all of the attention. This is one extremely sweet boy. He’ll make an absolutely wonderful companion for an equally sweet and wonderful family!
Update 12/11/09:
Laser recently moved to a foster home with even more dogs than in his previous MAESSR home. He has done well with all of the dogs of differing sizes since his move. Perhaps because he is feeling better, perhaps because of the individualized work he had in his last foster home, perhaps he just has decided if he can’t beat the other dogs in his home that he should join them for whatever reason, the change in Laser’s acceptance of other dogs is really great to see.
Treatable health issues continue to keep Laser in foster care, but he is a sweet boy who will soon be healthy enough for adoption. Keep checking for updates on this one as he continues to improve in every way with his stay in MAESSR care.
Update 09/15/09:
As Laser progresses through heartworm treatment and feels better, he loves his people more and more. When you pet him, he goes to sleep with contentment. Recently as his foster mom brushed his matted ears, he melted from a “sit” to a “down” and pretended to sleep with his tail wagging every time she brushed! Too funny.
He loves to roll on his back in the yard and go under bushes. He loves the fall weather and spends more time these days checking out the backyard. He just watches his foster mom when she is out there. If she goes in, he goes in to find her, or, he will stand in his crate waiting for something from the cookie jar. Milkbones are a hit for him.
Laser is not much for other dogs. He likes to be the only dog. As the other dogs in his foster home get Milkbones, he glares at them as if that will make them give him their treats. Of course, that is not going to happen! And if his foster mom tells the other dogs anything, Laser answers her! He makes her laugh. She had him out for a long time and then put him up to give the rest of the dogs a chance for a potty break. He barked at her as if she had crushed his entire world. He loves walks, kisses, and being brushed. And he knows for sure the running hose water must be stopped, even if it is filling the dogs’ swimming pool. Talk about a wet dog! He also loves to be there when there is work in the kitchen and seems very content to supervise the dishes getting done.
Before long Laser will be going for his second heartworm treatment and then altering. But, he managed to get an eye infection that has him on medication. He had a rough go with the first heartworm treatment, so the second will wait until the eye medication is done. Keep fingers crossed that finishing heartworm treatment will go well for this boy!
Update 08/02/09:
Good news! Laser has started his treatment for heartworm disease. He has handled that so well and hopefully will ease through the rest of treatment without any complications. He is such a sweet dog that is just thrilled to be near anybody.
He, however, really is not good with the resident dogs in his foster home. The good news is that his foster mom has been able to separate him from the others. He is a dog that needs to be out and about by himself for now.
With people Laser’s behavior is totally different. He has really taken on an entertaining personality with his foster family. Just envision this: he will look around a door to see if he wants to go in that room. He always chooses the room with the most people. Then he sits in the middle of the room and shows off. He will “give paw,” “down,” and “sit,” all in random order to see what will get him petted. He is also a bit of a Milkbone thief. His foster mom left his two bones on the counter for when he came in from the yard. As he went outside, he ran by the counter and took the Milkbones. Hummm………..
More on Laser’s antics to come!
Original:
This friendly Springer came to MAESSR from a family in North Carolina that did not want him anymore. Laser is a gentle dog with his foster mom and with all adults that have petted him. He has not been around children since coming to his foster home but may have that opportunity after he is vetted. He has not mixed with the resident dogs in his foster home and won’t either until his first vet visit is completed. After that, there should be ample chance to enjoy canine company. One thing his foster family is certain of now is that Laser would not be good with cats, rabbits, or other small animals. This boy HUNTS as if on a mission.
Laser came to MAESSR with a positive testing for heartworms. The course of treatment for this is to be determined. He also came with VERY DRY skin and dull, shaved fur. Care for this has started and his foster mom will continue to work to relieve these issues with the vet and with good food and baths and grooming. He loves to be brushed. He seems to have an ear infection that is healing and is a dog that needs his ears cleaned weekly.
Happiness for Laser comes in several ways. He will sit next to you on the floor and be petted for hours. He doesn’t seem overly interested in toys but loves the “BIG water dish”, otherwise known as the “kids’ pool.” He knows “sit” for goodies and to put on or off his collar and leash. Laser is very good on leash, except when confronted by running-loose cats. If they prove too much, he can drag his walking companion after them. But, his foster mom can say “walk gentle and no pulling” as they head out door, and, he is so good about it.
Laser knows to “come” when called. He would love to sleep with you on a bed or the couch but does not enjoy that privilege now. He doesn’t like to be put in a crate and he is fairly noisy when voicing his complaints about it. He sees no point why he should not be next to humans all day every day. He takes a long while to quiet in his crate for the night or when his family goes to work but he sleeps fine after that. He responded well to his foster mom when she told him “no” to counter-surfing and he is totally housebroken.
Perhaps what Laser loves to do most is to roll on his back and play in the yard. He would spend hours outdoors with someone. He has so much love to give. More on this southern sweetheart as he settles in.
