Update 01/29/11:
This gorgeous, shy guy has grown by leaps and bounds in learning the pleasures of being a family pet during his time in foster care. Lane now comes when called, enjoys a good head rub and looks forward to greeting his foster parents upon their arrival home. At times, Lane does like his space, but he is spending more and more time in the company of his foster parents and the other dogs.
Lane went to the groomer for spa day and got a glowing report. Although he was a little nervous, he was tolerant of being bathed, having the clippers used on his head, and getting his nails trimmed. The only thing he was not too impressed with was the big blower; he didn’t mind the smaller dryer in his crate. Lane was also recently neutered and came through the procedure well. He held a grudge for a little while, but a few duck treats from his foster mom won him back over.
It has been great fun for Lane’s foster family to see his joy in the simple pleasures of a dog’s life – stretching out on a dog bed, chewing on bones, even engaging in his first game of tug! Now, Lane is ready to share some new discoveries with his forever family. Although he is 13 months old, many things are still new to him. While this is exciting, it can also be a little scary at times. Lane needs a patient and loving family who can continue to guide him on his way to becoming a great and loyal companion.
Original:
Lane came into MAESSR’s care along with his two brothers, Cyclone and Caine, when their owner encountered financial difficulties and was no longer able to care for them.
Although Lane was extremely shy and submissive when he first came to his foster home, he is gradually learning more about the world around him and getting more comfortable. He is good with the other dogs in his foster home, two female and one male Springer, although he is hesitant about engaging them in play and for the most part has kept his distance. He ignores the resident cats, especially since just one investigative sniff resulted in a loud hiss from kitty, which he found quite intimidating.
Lane is housebroken and goes to the door when he needs to go out. He is also crate-trained and goes into his crate readily when his foster parents go out and at night. Lane’s exposure to things that are second nature for most dogs, such as normal household living, riding in cars, and leash walking are limited. His foster family has been working with him on these things and with a little encouragement (and plenty of treats!), Lane is coming around. He doesn’t have much experience with toys and avoided them for his first few days in foster care. Recently though, Lane’s foster mom caught him chewing a bone in the living room! Unfortunately as soon as Lane saw her, he left the bone to go to another room.
At the vet’s office, Lane was very nervous about everything but was tolerant of the doctor looking in his ears and eyes, getting his shots, and even drawing his blood for the heartworm test – good boy, Lane! He got a pretty good report from the vet, but was sent home with instructions to gain weight. Like most Springers, Lane is quite a chowhound so gaining weight should be no problem for him! Lane’s house manners are great with the exception of his being a counter-surfer extraordinaire! His foster parents are working on teaching him to keep off the counters, but because he is so sensitive to correction they are going slowly. Lane does not yet know any commands, but this will come as he gets more comfortable with his new surroundings.
Lane is a sweet and submissive boy who will need a loving family to give him lots of affection and continue to show him the joys of being an indoor pet. He has already made great progress in the short time that he has been in foster care. He regularly approaches his foster parents for pets and now shows his excitement at their arrival home with much tail wagging and running about. Under his shy exterior beats the heart of a fantastic Springer Spaniel just waiting for his forever family to draw it out!
