Landry’s Maryland owner relinquished him due to an unfortunate incident, which ultimately led to a minor bite. According to the owner, she walked outside to talk to her neighbor and Landry followed behind her. The neighbor, who recently had foot surgery, was out with her dog. Both dogs were unleashed with no fence separating them. The neighbor’s dog was barking at Landry, and Landry was very excited. Because the neighbor recently had foot surgery, the owner did not want Landry to approach them. Landry tried to run towards the dog several times and the owner redirected him. Landry went towards the other dog again but this time the owner grabbed him by the collar and when she did, he quickly turned and nipped her on her hand. The owner describes the bite as a quick nip and release that did not require medical attention. It had never happened before. The owner was then frightened of him and felt it would be best for all concerned if Landry found another home.
Landry shows some signs of resource guarding over high value treats. He will growl over bones, rawhide, or a Kong with peanut butter. He may also growl over stolen objects such paper or dish rags. When Landry steals something, he will clamp down hard and refuse to drop it. His foster mom will trade him a treat to get him to release. This boy is a counter-surfer who likes to steal things that do not belong to him. Filled with curiosity, he likes to stand on his hind legs to look at things.
Landry is anxious around strangers. According to the previous owner, this is demonstrated mostly when meeting new adults. When unfamiliar adults enter the home, Landry barks a lot and seems unsure of what to do. He may back up a little bit or hide under the table but eventually comes around. When walking on a leash, Landry will stop walking if a stranger is approaching and he will sometimes lie down.
With familiar people Landry does very well, although he tends to become too excited. He jumps and runs in circles and at times it is hard to calm him down. Landry was fantastic with the previous owner’s boys, ages 9 and 12. The boys could take toys from his mouth, roughhouse with him, lie on him, play with him, and Landry was great. MAESSR would not recommend placement with toddlers or small children because of how hyper he is. With dogs known and unknown, Landry is great. He has never been around cats but has demonstrated prey drive around birds.
Landry loves water and enjoys getting a bath. He has been known to jump in the bathtub with the former owner’s kids. He is good with grooming, brushing, nails, and feet; although he does not like his ears brushed or trimmed. Landry is housetrained and he was crate trained as a puppy. He currently is not crated. Landry rides well in a car and typically enjoys going for a ride.
Landry is super high energy. He loves balls, playing fetch, and frisbee. He loves to chase leaves and catch them!
Landry was started on an inexpensive anxiety medication to help him feel safer in scary situations. It has helped him to be happier about new/different situations and people. His foster mom feels that this anxiety is probably genetic since MAESSR has had other dogs from this same breeder that all have the same anxiety. Due to this, Landry’s forever home will be required to keep him on anxiety medication for a minimum of a year after adoption.
An ideal family for Landry would be one that can lovingly work with him to overcome his anxieties and provide him with an active lifestyle.
