Update 09/08/09: Lance was briefly placed in an adoptive home. Due to a pushy male Springer there and, Lance not tolerating too much pushiness without pushing back, Lance has been returned to MAESSR’s care. He rejoined his original foster family where he gets along great with the resident female Springer, loves her company and naps near her all day while his foster mom works. He lets the resident female ESS get away with taking his bed, sharing his food, almost anything. There is also a resident male in the home too. Lance and the male terrier have reached an understanding that allows them to be in the same room, but they don’t really care for each other.
Back in foster care, Lance is his usual goofy self. Completely housebroken, he would probably counter surf if left alone, but knows not to do so when people are around. He pads around the house with his foster parents, picking up toys to be thrown, playing with the female spaniel and looking out the window at the birds. He’s not much of a barker, mainly mimicking the female spaniel. He knows that a stern “Quiet” means to settle down somewhere and wait for the next adventure.
Lance is a sweet boy and can be a great fit for many families. He does seem to have his preferences when it comes to canine housemates and will likely be happiest with a resident female or a very, very easy going male. If this is the mix in your home, Lance may be perfect for you!!
Original: Lance was adopted as a puppy from a shelter in Pennsylvania. Just three short months later, he was returned because the family found they didn’t have time for him. Upon arriving in foster care, Lance was a bit head shy and would plaster himself to the floor. He quickly got over his shyness when he realized his foster mom meant him no harm. This took all of 24 hours. What an adaptable little fellow!
This youngster was reported by his surrendering family to be good with kids. Since in foster care, he has met children briefly. While at the vet’s office, Lance sat very nicely as 2 little girls, about 8 years old, reached over his head and under to pet him. He was such a sweetie with them! He’s not so sure about cats. This was evidenced by his intense focus at the vet’s office where he went to the floor, put his head between his paws and stared at the office cat which was hissing at him. He didn’t know what to make of this as the cat kept approaching. Silly cat!
Lance was not neutered yet when he returned to the shelter, so MAESSR had that done. He came through his procedure with flying colors. He has proven himself to be good with other dogs, completely house and crate trained. He loves to cuddle and play with toys and tries his hardest to play with the resident dogs in his foster home. He prefers the females but that may just be because the males are a bit grumbly with new dogs.
At just 35 pounds Lance is a small boy. He is not high energy and walks pretty well on leash. He likes to be close to his people and is quiet in his crate, whether in the room with his people or in another. He is not a big barker except when his foster mom comes home from work, and he wants out to go potty. He loves to ride in the car. Initially not sure about his foster mom’s wagon, he now hops in with an “Oh boy, adventure time!” on his face.
Lance knows he’s supposed to sit to get his leash on, but sometimes his excitement gets the best of him. He knows down and is learning stay, and generally behaves in a manner that makes his foster mom forget he’s only one year old. He doesn’t counter surf or trash dive, and his begging is a reserved manner of watching to see, if possible, treats will come his way. An obedience class with his new family would really help this boy to become a perfect canine good citizen and, as a quick learner, is something he would most likely really enjoy.
In every respect Lance is a real sweetie and ready for his new beginning!
