Update 12/01/2020: “She is such a sweet little girl that loves to cuddle.”
Lacey is doing great in her foster home! Considering that she was not a house dog in her previous life, her progress has been amazing. She is slowly moving about the house more and more and her personality is starting to shine through. Her foster mom is so proud of her every day. She’s trying new things and adapting so quickly. For example: she now goes up and down the stairs from the first floor to the second floor on her own with ease. She was petrified to just go through a doorway only two months ago…and now she’s going up and down steps!
On walks Lacey is doing better; even seeing new people and new things like front yard holiday inflatables are becoming less scary. Brave girl! And even though she is still quite skittish she works through her fears with the sweetest of disposition.
Lacey’s manners are incredible. She is such a sweet little girl that loves to cuddle.
Lacey has gained a little weight and has completed all her medications for now. She will take another round of treatment in two months for whip worms that she had back in September. Her one ear was slightly inflamed during a vet visit, so ear cleaning occurs twice weekly. Some dandruff is being treated with a fish oil supplement.
She is still waiting for her spay surgery but once Lacey has healed from that, she will be ready to join her lucky forever family.
Original: “Lacey is an absolute sweetheart but she’s extremely shy and afraid of all the newness in her life right now.”
Lacey came into MAESSR’s care when a Maryland breeder developed serious health issues and had to rehome his Springers.
Lacey is an absolute sweetheart but she’s extremely shy and afraid of all the newness in her life right now. She’s slowly adapting on a day-by-day basis. She chose her “home base” in the family room where she immediately plopped down on the bed. That is the place where she feels the safest and most comfortable. Slowly being introduced to other parts of the house, this little Velcro girl follows her foster parents into the living room, stays for a short while, and then runs back to her bed in the family room. She will follow her foster parents outside but runs back into her space in the family room when she comes back into the house.
Afraid of doorways and different type of flooring, Lacey finds moving from one room to another scary especially if she’s moving from tile flooring to hardwood flooring. Her foster parents’ goal is to get her to move about the house with ease and not be afraid of those transitions. One can tell that she wants to follow them from room to room but she’s afraid. She does move from the family room/kitchen area into the living room so they’re making progress. Baby steps!
Since the owner of the Maryland kennel was a male, Lacey had a natural affinity for her foster dad but she is starting really to trust and warm up to her foster mom as well. Lacey loves affection and is very cuddly. She loves to put her paws up on both her foster parents for affection. They are working on having her just sit next to them to pet her. She also loves being fed and will do a little dance when it’s time to eat.
Housetrained, Lacey just started signaling to go outside by walking towards the back door. Yay, Lacey!
When she was transported to her foster home, she was crated in the car but inside the house she does not stay in the crate. She sleeps on her bed in the family room and when her foster parents are not at home. Sometimes she’s up on the couch when they return.
For having lived outside most of her life, Lacey has wonderful house manners. She has not done any counter-surfing or trash diving and she does not chew any inappropriate items. She gets up on the chair and sofa in the family room.
As far as commands in her repertoire, she knows “Lacey Off” and is learning “stay,” “come,” and “down.” Outside she has wonderful recall skills and will come right to her person if her name is called or if one whistles. Learning to walk on a leash is a new skill for Lacey. She doesn’t pull but she is skittish so if she encounters something scary or new to her—like seeing a garbage can in the street– she will pull. When that happens, her foster parents redirect her and she is fine. She met a man the other day in the street and approached him to say hello but when she saw a couple walking by with a baby she was scared. Meeting the neighbor’s 3 1/2 year old daughter was a scary new experience for Lacey. She growled a little when the girl approached so her foster mom moved Lacey away from her. There are so many things in this new world that Lacey must get used to! She is okay in the car but got car sick frequently during her 90 minute ride to her foster home.
Lacey quickly discovered toys. She especially likes the Kong, chewing on the nylabones, and playing with her grey squirrel that covers a water bottle. Lacey stayed at another MAESSR volunteer’s home temporarily before coming to her current foster home. She was great with the other dogs there and would play with them but was more interested in the humans.
Lacey does not guard any resources; her foster parents can take food and toys away from her without any issues. She is fed in different places on the main floor of the house to get her used to moving around the house.
Her energy level is low when her foster dad goes to work or her foster mom is not around. Her energy level goes way up when everyone is home at the same time. Then it’s time for fun! This pretty girl was good at the groomer and also at her vet appointments.
Lacey would love a quiet forever home with parents who have lots of patience and love. Lacey has much love and devotion to give in return.
