Even the vet agrees- it’s a tough call, but Kramer is not quite 100% English Springer Spaniel. There seems to be a bit of Hound in him. He is black and white with beautiful freckling. He has a full tail – not docked.
Everyone who meets him comments on his fine temperament, including the vet and several professional dog trainers.
Kramer still exhibits some puppy behaviors. He needs to be redirected to his toys sometimes when he gets hold of a book or other object. He stays confined in our dog-proofed kitchen whenever we can’t keep an eye on him. We are working on getting him happily accustomed to his crate, but he’s not at that point yet. Outside he needs to be on-leash at all times…he can climb our 5-foot wood and wire fence. And then he runs fast and (once) far.
He is pretty peaceful around other dogs and cats but he does have a tendency to mark territory – especially in the presence of our cat. There is definitely an indication of male Alpha dog in him. He is great with children.
In training, he’s working on heel, sit and stay. He does not pull on the leash. Given his enthusiasm for life I think he needs ongoing training. He is very eager to please and learns quickly. He loves to be petted, scratched on the belly and just plain loved.
Update:
Kramer has been doing really well in foster care. He no longer marks in the house. He is still a puppy so he will chew if left alone. Kramer has charmed everyone who meets him. They all think that he is the best and sweetest dog.
Kramer is an unrepentant fence climber and cannot be left outside alone.
