MAESSR was called to rescue Kimber as her Ohio owners had returned her to where they had purchased her due to her having multiple seizures. MAESSR had to move quickly as this sweet girl was going to be euthanized if she was not picked up within a day. Kimber had a seizure during transport then settled in at her foster home where she did have another seizure during the first week. This is being monitored by the vet.
Housetraining is a work in progress for Kimber and her foster parents. She is taken out every few hours as she does not consistently have a specific signal to indicate her need to go out. Sometimes she appeared to signal with a bark or by going to the door; however, at other times there is no signal.
Crate training is another work in progress for Kimber. She will go in and out of the crate to investigate on her own and she is easily coaxed into the crate when needed like when her foster family needs to go out. She can become agitated at times when crated and occasionally has an accident.
Kimber has the choice of three dog beds in her foster parents’ bedroom. Although one of the resident Springers tends to “own” one of the beds, Kimber can be found in any of them on any given day. Luckily, the resident Springer does not mind sharing!
Kimber is one of three Springers living in her foster home. One is an older girl that tolerates Kimber and her foster sister fairly well. The second Springer is 18 months … so there are two Springers under two under one roof! Kimber engages this younger Springer with hard play. The girls play rough but when told to stop, both subside their activity. Kimber is an extremely high energy, strong female Springer. She is fast and strong for a girl her size.
Kimber is learning the difference between indoor and outdoor play. She generally demonstrates appropriate behavior indoors but when in the mood to play, she needs to be reminded. She counter-surfed when she first came to her foster home. This habit has seemed to subside after being taught this is not proper behavior. The trash is in an enclosed area of the kitchen and when made available for Kimber to investigate, she has not shown interest.
In her foster home, dogs are not permitted to use the family’s furniture. The dogs are only allowed their front paws on their foster parent’s lap when they are getting attention. Occasionally, Kimber takes advantage of the situation and hops all of the way on the furniture but when corrected gets down. Kimber likes to investigate around the house. She will pick up a shoe or sometimes other items but quickly leaves it alone when told to do so. Kimber has chewed on unexpected items but when corrected, she stops.
When it comes to commands, Kimber knows “sit,” “off,” and “leave it.” She is working on “lie down,” “stay,” and “shake.” She is doing well on the leash during walks and when going outside to use the “facilities.” She rarely pulls on the leash unless there is something that catches her attention but quickly responds when told to stop. Kimber is friendly with strangers but tends to want to jump. She is working on controlling her excitement. She generally rides well in the back seat of the car but at times prefers to ride in the front seat and has occasionally jumped over the seat to get there.
Kimber seemed to be unsure of how to use toys when she first came to her foster family’s home. Luckily, the resident Springers are toy experts and showed Kimber how fun it can be to clear out the toy basket daily. Although she does not specifically have a favorite toy, she tends to like to have the toy the resident Springer is playing with. Kimber likes to play tug with her sisters as well.
Kimber does not guard her food nor toys. Both have been taken away to test her patience and she has responded favorably. She is fed alone either in her crate or in the kitchen. Currently, she is being fed out of a bowl to slow her down eating. Previously, Kimber ate so fast she did not even savor the food.
When she has been at the vet, Kimber behaves properly. She has recently been spayed and the only issue was keeping her inactive during recovery. She has not gone to groomer yet and since her nails were cut before coming to foster care and when she was being spayed, her foster parents do not know how she tolerated the process. She is good when having her ears cleaned, though.
Kimber’s forever family will need to give her plenty of opportunities to run and play. An active family that likes to hike, walk, or just generally be outdoors would be her dream home. Although Kimber would do well as a only dog, having another Springer playmate may help her to expend some of her energy.
Make this ball of energy your own!
