Update 08/05/09: Kiley’s foster mom has been working some very long hours of late, but Kiley has not been overlooked. Both she and Kiley are thankful for roommates and pet sitters that dogs LOVE!
Kiley remains a gal who is soft for people. She moved to a new foster home recently and, with new humans and dogs to meet, she continues to love the people. Kiley is comfortable with crating. When you walk near her crate, her tail thumps and with a full tail, it is quite a sweet sound to hear. Her foster mom loves it.
When Kiley hears a man’s whistle, her response is to “come”. Her foster mom can’t whistle so she has no clue if Kiley will do that for ladies. Regardless of gender, Kiley loves to hang out in the yard or in the house with her people and has good house manners. She would prefer to be right at your side but will stay on the floor when asked to “down”. She likes her Milk Bone rewards for good behavior.
Kiley loves combs and brushing. She is not so big on formal obedience but will do anything along the line of helping around the house, including finding a toy under the coffee table that another dog left. Kiley doesn’t like to share her humans with cats or dogs. However, she is fine if other pets stay out of her personal space which amounts to about a 5-foot circle around her. She is one that may be best suited as an only dog, or, as a second dog with one that is very submissive.
From her inner core to those beautiful tri-color markings, Kiley shows her sweetness through and through. She’s ready for one more move and will thrive with her very own family to love and thump her tail for.
Update 06/04/09: Kiley went back to the vet’s office for her last two heartworm injections. When her foster mom picked her up, one night early, she was told that Kiley had been a wonderful patient, so the vet’s staff felt she could leave a little early. She’s doing fine and is as good as can be. She’s staying in her crate except for her short outs on the leash. Once again, her “Good as Gold” is shining!
Kiley’s jealousy of the other dogs is getting a lot better as time passes and her health improves. That said, if you pet one, you just have to be ready to offer the same to all. Kiley is a good girl and will be looking for her very own family as soon as spaying is complete. When that day arrives, her foster mom knows that someone will be happy with themselves for taking Kiley into their hearts and home.
Update 05/07/09: Kiley’s “Good as Gold” is paying off. Despite being on confinement for ten days now, and with twenty more to go in the first phase of her heartworm treatment, she is a dream. She seems to be in no pain and is content to just go outside long enough to potty. With following the vet’s instruction, Kiley has not been allowed to play with toys outside, but she loves the inside toys with food hidden inside. Her foster mom thinks she is feeling better than when she arrived, but her personality has not changed a lot yet.
Kiley is showing a little jealously toward the resident dog. It is nothing mean, just that Springer way of wanting to be as close to you as they can get. Before the heart treatment started, Kiley was walked daily and walks right beside you. One thing you have to watch her with is the car. If you open a door she will be in, back or front; she doesn’t care. She just loves to be in the car.
While her foster mom goes to work, Kiley is still staying in her crate, only because of the heartworm treatment. She still sleeps by the side of the bed. One night she was a little afraid of the thunder, not a bad fright, but she just needed a “you’re OK” pet.
In a few weeks Kiley will go back for the second part of her heartworm treatment and will be with the vet for three days. Her foster mom is betting Kiley still comes back as good as gold. She would be a wonderful dog for an older couple. Kiley will never leave your side and might also be a good match for someone without a fenced area at home but with a safe yard. More news on Kiley’s progress coming.
Original: It was Kiley’s lucky day when she was found as a stray in South Carolina and then made her way into MAESSR’s care. This sweet girl was suffering from severe heart worm infestation and without treatment she would have perished.
Kiley was obviously someone’s inside pet at one time since she is housebroken and has nice inside manners. There is no counter surfing, trash picking, or inappropriate chewing for Kiley. She has never tried to get on the furniture, and she does not jump up on people when she meets them. Although Kiley is not enamored by her crate, she will go in when told to do so, but then looks at you wondering what she did wrong. She eats her meals in her crate to separate her from the resident dogs and she sleeps in her crate at night. By her third day in foster care, Kiley was given free reign of the house while her foster family leaves for work. This good girl comes when called even when she sees a friend across the street that she would like to greet.
Because of her heartworm treatment, Kiley is not a playful dog right now. Hopefully, once she starts feeling better, this will change. Now, she just likes to stay close to her foster mom for love and comfort. At the completion of her heartworm treatments, Kiley will be spayed and her dew claws will be removed since they are very loose.
Watch for updates on this sweet Springer who is as “Good as Gold” according to her foster mom.
