Update 11/05/03:
Kelly found a perfect forever home with a retired couple that appreciates the grace and wisdom of an older gal. While this couple hopes to have a long time with Kelly, they have decided to open up their home to older dogs as long as they are able to care for them.
Update 10/18/03:
Kelly continues to do well in her foster home. She is a slim, trim and fit 48 pounds, all from eating properly and getting plenty of exercise. This weight loss combined with daily doses of glucosamine-chondroitin has made Kelly a different dog. She actually runs at the dog park, and it is a joy to watch. Steps are no longer an issue for this gal either. New pictures will be posted soon to show how fabulous this gal looks.
Kelly has also come in contact with lots of children at the park and on the street. She adores children and does extraordinarily well with them.
While not the ring-leader, Kelly has become a joyful co-conspirator with her foster siblings. They love to run and play at the dog park and walk side-by-side on our long walks. She seems to be enjoying the companionship of her new found Springer friends as much as the love and kisses from her foster mom. She will happily cuddle with any canine or human companion.
Nevertheless, on Friday, Kelly ran up to an older woman on the street and jumped for joy at her feet. This tells her foster mom that she misses her previous (deceased) owners who were a bit older. It got her foster mom thinking that maybe some kind gray-headed person would appreciate Kelly’s warm and devoted companionship. Would that kind person be you?
Update 9/9/03:
The change in Kelly in the last two -and-a-half weeks is nothing short of remarkable. With daily doses of glucosamine/chondroitin, a little bit of weight loss and some exercise, she is a different dog. She is happy to see her foster mom grab the leash whereas before she didn’t seem to know that the leash meant fun for her. She loves going to the dog park and bounds out of the car each morning and runs to the gate. Kelly was obviously so devoted to her previous owner throughout his long illness that she didn’t recognize her own need for exercise.
Kelly saw the vet today, and the vet said she is in excellent physical health and that she likely has a few years left to give her special doggy kisses. She is completely up-to-date on her shots and is now on heartworm preventative.
Kelly would thrive in a home that wants to give/receive love but doesn’t want a high energy dog. Kelly is happy to lie at your feet and look at you as if you hung the moon.
Original:
Miss Kelly has come to MAESSR as a result of losing her owner after a long illness. One can imagine that she was a devoted companion to him in his time of need as she is perfectly content to lay at your feet or side for hours on end.
Kelly is a happy girl who literally jumped for joy upon seeing her foster mom return to pick her up from the groomer. It was if she was saying, “Hey mom, over here! Look at me! Aren’t I fabulous?” The groomer said she was a joy on the grooming table and even seemed to fall asleep standing up at one point. She didn’t like it when the groomer groomed her paws, but it got done anyway.
Kelly has a typical Springer happy disposition in that she wiggles her butt with joy at the slightest show of attention, affection or food! She obviously knows a thing or two about human food as she looks longingly when her foster mom eats. However, she never stoops to begging. She is much too much of a lady to do something as common as beg for food.
When she arrived she had a difficult time navigating the steps. After 3 doses of Glucosamine/Chondroitin, she manages the steps much better but is still a bit slow. It is entirely possible that she will continue to show improvement. Helping this gal lose a few pounds with probably improve her gait, too. She probably didn’t get a lot of exercise when her owner was ill but happily dons her leash and heads out with her foster siblings. She likes to be outside but only if her human is near.
Kelly was left alone with her foster siblings today for three hours and it appeared to be uneventful. Either that or they forged a pact to never tell. The house was still standing and everything was in the same place as when the humans left. She gets along fine with the resident Springers. There has been no barking, growling or ugliness. In fact, I don’t think this gal is capable of doing one bad thing.
Kelly was a devoted companion to her owner through the years and in his final time of need. Are you the one who will return the favor and reward this very sweet gal for her devotion?
