Original: “She has a mischievous spirit and is the ringleader in most of the puppy capers at her foster home.”
Although it is rare for MAESSR to have puppies for placement, Katie and her littermate Casey came into MAESSR’s care when a Springer breeder in Maryland developed serious health problems and had to rehome his dogs.
Katie came to her foster home as a 12- week old along with her brother, Casey. She was welcomed by the two resident Springers and soon she established them as her “aunties.” Her foster mom also has a bunny, but Katie has been told to “stay back” because she makes the bunny nervous!
Katie is full of life and, along with her brother, she has brought much laughter and fun to her foster family. She has a mischievous spirit and is the ringleader in most of the puppy capers at her foster home. Katie enjoys running in the field with the other dogs and taking long walks with her foster mom. She loves the water and sand and will a jump into the river and pond without any prompting. When Katie is in the house, she does calm down and will cuddle with her foster mom and the other Springers. She loves to play and very quickly established herself as the ball player in the house and brings back the balls to her foster mom to throw again.
This smart little girl knows her name, will come when called, will sit on demand, and –if her people are lucky– will give her foster mom her paw to shake. She is a good eater but does dominate the bowl and occasionally counter-surfs for goodies. She walks on a leash with just a little pulling and will benefit from more training. Katie still does not signal to go out but when she starts to wander about, her foster mom takes her out. She has not had many accidents in the house.
MAESSR only places puppies in homes that are committed to training and bonding with the pup in obedience classes. Puppies require a lot of care, attention, and patience, and they do chew on things! The decision to get a puppy and raise it to be a healthy, happy, and well-adjusted dog is a serious commitment. To reinforce this commitment, MAESSR requires all adopters of dogs one year old and younger to enroll their puppy in obedience classes within 60 days of adoption. Katie will be the star of the class!
Katie sleeps in her crate at night with some water and a treat available. She likes to have her crate covered with a sheet, so she is not disturbed. She is a little howler who sometimes sounds like a little quail when she first goes into her crate. Katie Bird soon quiets down and will sleep until her foster mom comes to let her out in the morning.
Katie has been in the car and travels in her crate to the vet with no trouble. Recently, she had a trip to the store and sat in the cart for all to admire how good she was. When her foster mom leaves the house, Katie stays in her playpen inside with her brother. She seems not to mind being left for a short time until her foster mom is home again. At the end of the day, all the Springers at Katie’s foster home spend time on the sofa and calm down before going to sleep.
Katie is a fun, spunky little pup who will make some family a wonderful companion.
